ITHACA, N.Y. — Peter Moynihan scored four goals, including the go-ahead score with 2:52 remaining, as Yale handed No. 9 Cornell a 13-12 setback Saturday at Schoellkopf Field, dropping the Big Red to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in Ivy League play.
Cornell held a 9-7 lead midway through the second quarter and appeared to be firmly in control, but Yale chipped away with four unanswered goals from the 6:43 mark in the third to the 11:39 mark of the fourth, taking a 12-10 lead.
The Bulldogs then scored two of the first three goals in the fourth — capped by a Cole Jackson tally at 11:39 that pushed Yale ahead 12-10 — and Moynihan's strike with under three minutes left proved to be the winner.
Luke Robinson pulled Cornell within one with 21 seconds left, and the Big Red put two shots on goal in the waning seconds, but ran out of time.
Brian Luzzi was Cornell's offensive catalyst, matching his career high with four goals, all unassisted, on six shots.
Willem Firth added four goals and an assist, while Goldstein generated eight shots without finding the back of the net. Robinson, added two assists to go with his fourth quarter goal.
The Big Red outshot Yale 44-38, including 32-24 on goal, and won 19 of 29 faceoffs behind
Michael Melkonian's dominant performance at the X, but could not solve Yale goalkeeper Ben Friedman down the stretch. Friedman made 20 saves in the win, including six in the fourth quarter when Cornell needed answers most.
Moynihan finished with four goals on seven shots to pace the Bulldogs, while Connor Gately added a goal and two assists and Sean Grogan contributed two goals and an assist. Yale scored twice on man-up chances, both of which came during the decisive 4-0 second half run for the Bulldogs.
