PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 33rd-ranked Cornell men's tennis team earned a key Ivy League road victory Friday afternoon, defeating No. 37 Princeton 4-2 at the Cordish Family Outdoor Tennis Center. The Big Red improved to 14-3 (2-1 Ivy), while Princeton fell to 14-9 (0-4 Ivy).
The win also marked a milestone for head coach Silviu Tanasiou, who recorded his 200th career victory leading the Cornell program. He becomes the 16th Big Red coach across all sports to reach the milestone, upping his record to 200-109 overall (.647).
Cornell captured the doubles point by winning two of three matches. Petar Teodorovic and Felipe Pinzon evened doubles play with a 6-3 win at No. 3, and the duo of Rushil Khosla and Rethin Pranav Senthil Kumar clinched the point with a tight 7-6 victory at No. 2 after Princeton took the top spot.
In singles, Princeton struck first with wins at Nos. 6 and 1 to take a 2-1 lead. Cornell responded with a strong push through the middle of the lineup.
Eric Verdes tied the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3, and Felipe Pinzon followed with a three-set comeback, defeating Milan Markovits 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 to give the Big Red the lead.
The clinching point came from Senthil Kumar at No. 4, who secured a 6-3, 6-4 win over Aleksandar Mitric to seal the team victory.
The No. 2 singles match was left unfinished once the outcome was decided.
Cornell will begin the stretch run of the Ivy season with a four-game homestand to end the regular campaign when it meets No. 39 Penn on Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m. at the Reis Tennis Center.
