Doubles Play, Pinzon Thriller Difference In 4-3 Win Over #39 Penn

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The 33rd-ranked Cornell men's tennis team continued its strong spring run with a dramatic 4-3 victory over No. 39 Penn on Sunday afternoon at the Reis Tennis Center. The Big Red improved to 15-3 (3-1 Ivy), while Penn fell to 16-9 (2-3 Ivy).

Cornell set the tone early with a decisive showing in doubles, capturing the opening point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Felipe Pinzon and Petar Teodorovic opened with a 6-3 victory, and Rethin Pranav Senthil Kumar teamed with Rushil Khosla to secure the point with a 6-4 win. The top match was left unfinished, though the Big Red tandem of Eric Verdes and Rodrigo Fernandes led 5-4 over No. 28 Manfredi Graziani and Aaron Sandler.

In singles, Penn answered with wins at Nos. 6 and 2 to take a 2-1 lead. Cornell responded through the middle of the lineup, as Senthil Kumar delivered a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 and Eric Verdes followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3 to push the Big Red back in front.

Penn again drew even with a three-set win at the top spot, setting the stage for a decisive match at No. 5.

There, Pinzon delivered the clincher, battling past Adam Bain 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to seal the team victory and cap a hard-fought afternoon. After splitting the opening two games, Pinzon took charge and won five consecutive to give Cornell the victory. The win marked the Big Red's 10th in its last 11 matches, including seven victories over ranked opponents.

Cornell will stay home to compete against Dartmouth (Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m.) and Harvard (Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m.) at Reis Tennis Center this coming weekend.
