Cornell Defense Holds Nation's Top Offense to Season-Low Seven Goals in 9-7 Victory over Duke

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Junior Matthew Tully made 12 saves and Cornell's defense forced 15 Duke turnovers Saturday, holding the nation's highest-scoring offense to a season-low seven goals in a 9-7 victory over the Blue Devils at Shark Stadium, improving the Big Red to 7-3 on the season.

Duke entered the contest averaging 16.20 goals per game, the best mark in the country, but Cornell's defense suffocated the Blue Devils throughout, keeping them off the board entirely in the fourth quarter and allowing just two goals in the second half.

Momentum swung in Cornell's favor in the third, when the Big Red scored three-straight in just over 90-seconds, turning Duke's 5-4 halftime lead into a 7-5 advantage for Cornell. The burst began at 11:53 when junior Ryan Goldstein tied the game at five, and senior Jack Cascadden struck six seconds later, off the ensuing face-off, to give Cornell the lead. Senior Brian Luzzi added another at 10:22 to cap-off the run ..

Duke cut it to 7-6 before sophomore Luke Robinson and senior Brendan Staub scored in a span of 11 seconds, to push the margin to 9-6 with just under five minutes to play in the third. Duke made it a 9-7 game at the 3:42 mark when Max Sloat scored his third of the contest on a man-up chance for the Blue Devils.

The score would remain the same as Cornell held off a Duke comeback in the fourth, allowing one shot on goal and forcing five turnovers in the final 15-minutes to secure the win.

Cornell had seven different players find the back of the net, led by Robinson who netted two goals and Goldstein who scored once and added two assists for a team-best three points. Tully's performance between the pipes was the game's defining storyline. The junior made 12 saves and was a force outside the crease as well, recording two caused turnovers, part of a collective defensive effort that held a Duke attack featuring 43 shots to just 19 on goal and seven scores.
