Binghamton Rallies for Eight Unanswered to Top Baseball

ITHACA, N.Y. — Eight unanswered runs across the final four innings helped Binghamton turn a 4-3 deficit into an 11-4 victory over the Cornell baseball team in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Booth Field.

The Bearcats (18-13) needed just nine hits to extend their winning streak to eight games and have now won 12 of their last 14. Zach Anderson and Mike Stellrecht each collected two hits, while Zach Anderson, Tommy Popoff and Tim Hennig each drove in two runs.

Binghamton opened the game with a three-run first, plating its initial run on a delayed double steal before Popoff hit a two-run double.

Sophomore Tyler Beaulieu sparked the first of four unanswered runs for Cornell (6-21), beginning with a bases-loaded walk in the second inning. Freshman outfielder Trent Lopez hit a leadoff pinch-hit home run that traveled 463 feet to spark a three-run fifth, and senior infielder TJ Swidorski added a two-out, two-run home run to give Cornell a 4-3 lead.

The eight-run rally by Binghamton began in the sixth when Braylen Gonzalez drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch, absorbing a 95 mph fastball from sophomore right-hander Tavian Ramos. Binghamton took the lead when a wild pitch by senior right-hander Josh Shea with the bases loaded allowed each runner to advance.

Anderson hit a two-run home run in the seventh to give Binghamton a 7-4 lead, setting up Sean Sweeney for an RBI fielder's choice in the eighth. Andrew Heppner hit an RBI double — Binghamton's third consecutive hit to open the ninth — before Hennig capped the scoring with a two-run double to right-center.

Binghamton relievers Conlan Taylor, Ian Kaiser, Brady Lesiak and Hayden Tarsia combined to hold Cornell scoreless over the final 4 1/3 innings after Lopez and Swidorski's fifth-inning home runs.
