Men's Heavyweight Rowing to Host Syracuse, Navy for Goes Trophy

| By:

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell men's heavyweight rowing team returns home this Saturday to host Syracuse and Navy for the Goes Trophy on Cayuga Inlet.

Racing is set to begin at 8:45 a.m. with the 3V8+ and the 1V8+ being held 10 minutes after. The 2V8+ and 4V8+ races will be held at 9:20 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., respectively, leading up to the awards ceremony slated for 10:15 a.m. on the apron above the heavyweight dock. All races will be broadcast live on ESPN+ domestically and internationally on Stretch Internet.

Cornell enters this weekend's tri-meet coming off a split with Boston University last Saturday on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The Big Red's 2V8+ overcame a mid-race deficit to edge Boston University by just over one second, 6:10.170 to 6:11.384, and the 3V8+ earned a disqualification win after the Terriers twice drifted across the lane lines.

The 1V8+ dropped a close contest, 5:56.980 to 6:02.280, after settling into a stroke rate that proved too conservative against an aggressive Terrier squad.

Todd Kennett '91, the Spirit of '57 Director of Rowing and head coach of Cornell men's heavyweight rowing, saw lessons throughout the afternoon that point toward Saturday's higher-stakes test.

"Last week with BU was set up to give all the boats the opportunity to race in a close and hard race," Kennett said. "This weekend gets even more intense."

Syracuse has won each of the last five Goes Trophy races and claimed the Stagg Trophy in each of the last six runnings. Cornell last won the Goes Trophy in 2018 and has not claimed the Stagg Trophy since 2016.

The Orange are a deep program whose 1V8+ has reached the IRA grand final in each of the last three years. Navy, under first-year head coach Matt Fleur following Bruce Gladstone's retirement, brings in its trademark relentlessness.

"Syracuse is very good," Kennett said. "Navy will race really hard, never quit, and be absolutely relentless."

Saturday morning is forecast to bring temperatures in the high 50s to low 60s with a building south tailwind — conditions Kennett called "warm and fast — fun combo for racing."
