ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell pushed one of the Ivy League's top contenders to the brink Saturday afternoon, but a sudden-death overtime goal lifted Penn to an 8-7 victory at Schoellkopf Field.
The Big Red showed resilience throughout, erasing an early deficit and forcing extra time, only to see Penn capitalize on its opening possession in overtime after winning the draw.
Penn struck first with three unanswered goals in the opening quarter, but Cornell responded emphatically. Behind a surge of offensive pressure and crisp ball movement, the Big Red rattled off five straight scores to take a 5-3 lead after one period.
Despite going scoreless in the second and third quarters, Cornell maintained control in key areas, particularly on the defensive end. The Big Red's zone pressure slowed Penn's attack and kept the margin within reach, trailing 7-5 entering the fourth.
Cornell's persistence paid off in the final frame. With intensity building on both sides, the Big Red broke through with two late goals, including the equalizer from leading scorer Ellie Bergin with 2:08 remaining to knot the game at 7-7 and force overtime.
In the extra period, Penn secured the draw and converted quickly, ending the contest on its first possession.
Lilly Whaling led Cornell offensively with a career-best three goals for her first hat trick, while Bergin added two. Ella Wilmot and Kathleen Michaud each contributed a goal.
Cornell controlled much of the statistical battle, out shooting Penn 28-15 and holding advantages in ground balls (25-13) and turnovers forced (20-16). Senior Caitlin Tully led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers, while Lilly Whaling, Ella Wilmot and Mackenzie Clark collected three ground balls apiece. The Big Red also excelled in transition, converting 16 of 18 clear attempts.
While the result fell just short, Cornell's effort reflected the team's emphasis on generating more offensive opportunities and wearing down opposing defenses — a focus that showed in its commanding shot advantage.
With one regular-season game remaining, the Big Red turns its attention to next Saturday's matchup against Yale, where an Ivy League Tournament berth will be on the line. After a performance defined by grit and determination, Cornell enters the final week with momentum and a clear opportunity still ahead.
