ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Cornell men's outdoor track and field closed out competition at the Navy Invite on Saturday, April 18, with a balanced showing across sprints, distance, jumps and throws, highlighted by multiple event wins and a program top-10 mark from sophomore Panashe Nhenga.
Nhenga led the way on the track, opening the day with a win in the 100m dash in 10.58 before returning to place second in the 200m in 21.14, a time that moves him to No. 9 in program history. Sophomore Ricardo Lagares Jr. added a fifth-place finish in the 100m (10.77), while freshman Garrett Brennan took eighth in the 200m (21.73).
In the quarter mile, junior Neil Chowdhurry (48.92) and sophomore Seamus Finn (49.19) placed fifth and seventh, respectively. The Big Red middle-distance group followed with a tight pack in the 800m, as senior Finn Boyle (1:54.60) and senior Elijah Schechter (1:55.13) finished third and fourth. Cornell's depth showed again in the 1,500m, where sophomores Colin Martens (3:57.86) and Asher Patel (3:58.34) and senior Ryan Johnson (3:58.08) placed fourth through sixth in a closely contested race.
In the hurdles, sophomore Teddy Rauchway took sixth in the 110m hurdles (14.74), while sophomore Jason Meza delivered a standout performance in the 400m hurdles, winning the event in 53.12. "Jason continues to improve incrementally with each race rep, which is an exciting place to be mid-season," assistant coach Kayla Evans, noted.
Cornell's field event group turned in a dominant performance, headlined by a sweep of the top two spots in the triple jump from junior Desmond Whitley (14.90m) and junior Kameron Coleman (14.78m). Whitley also added a third-place finish in the long jump with 6.57m, while sophomore Stepan Matura captured the event title with a leap of 7.23m.
In the pole vault, senior Kagan Mancabelli cleared 5.02m for third place, with freshman Zachary Davidson finishing fourth with 4.87m.
The throwing events proved to be a major strength for the Big Red. Sophomore Peter Northrup led a 1-2-3-4 finish in the shot put with a winning mark of 17.72 meters, followed by freshman Joe Seib (17.21m), senior Noah Harman (16.84m) and junior Nicholas Frattina (15.67m).
"Our men's shot putters [are] continuing with strong consistency from the whole group. We are still looking for them to fire on all cylinders, but they are each getting closer to bigger and bigger throws," said associate head coach Kevin Phipps.
Seib went on to win the discus (48.87m), while Northrup added another victory in the hammer throw (55.50m). Freshman Aidan Kerr placed seventh in the hammer (49.48m).
In the javelin, senior Joseph Rachiele placed fifth with a throw of 54.27 meters, overcoming adversity late in the competition. "Joe showed some grit, finding a solid season's best in round six after having to switch his grip due to minor injury to his throwing hand," Phipps said.
Cornell also saw contributions in the decathlon, where freshman Kyle Velasco (5,696 points) and senior Gabe Ball (5,476 points) placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
The Big Red will look to build on the weekend's momentum as the outdoor season continues for them on Tuesday, April 21 at the Ithaca College Invite.
