Sawyer Highlights Cornell Effort on Day One of Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA — The Cornell women's track and field team opened competition Thursday at the Penn Relays with a trio of performances across the hammer throw and 400-meter hurdles.

In the college section of the hammer throw, Gabriella Vizcarrondo placed 21st with a mark of 47.07 meters.

Avery Hastings followed in the championship section of the hammer throw, finishing 11th with a throw of 55.72 meters.

On the track, Elise Sawyer turned in a strong performance in the championship section of the 400-meter hurdles, placing 19th with a season-best time of 59.84. The mark stands as Sawyer's second-fastest career performance and currently ranks No. 5 in the Ivy League this season.

Cornell will continue competition Friday at the Penn Relays, with events scheduled to begin at noon EST for the Big Red. Live streaming will be available on FloTrack, with results provided on the Penn Relays website.
