Big Red Throwers Lead Women’s Effort at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Cornell women's outdoor track and field team turned in a strong showing Friday at the Penn Relays, highlighted by record-setting performances in the shot put.

Nicole Loy led the way with a third-place finish, recording a throw of 14.69m to move to No. 4 all-time in program history. Claire Springer followed with a sixth-place finish at 14.22m, improving her No. 9 performance in Cornell history. Both athletes set new outdoor personal bests in one of the meet's deepest fields.

Associate head coach Kevin Phipps praised the pair's progression.

"I thought Nicole and Claire took some major steps forward as competitors today," Phipps said. "Both eclipsed 14m in the prelim, and continued to throw very well into the final. This was one of the deepest competitions they have seen all year, outside of HEPs, and to see them both have such great throws in the prelim and to continue that into the final with both of them hitting outdoor PBs is a great sign for the rest of the season."

On the track, Cornell's 4x100-meter relay team of Divine Bamgboye, Brianna Beckham, Natasha Redmond and Olivia Walters placed 13th in the Championship of America race with a time of 45.29.

Bamgboye also doubled back in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing 18th in 13.78, while Arianna Allen placed 24th in 13.94.

In the 4x400-meter relay, the quartet of Rachel Bethke, Eden Oje, Elika Vahhaji and Elise Sawyer took 19th with a time of 3:41.51.

Lauren Smith rounded out the field events with a 24th-place finish in the javelin, recording a throw of 35.63m.

Cornell will wrap up competition at the Penn Relays on Saturday. Live streaming will be available on FloTrack, with results provided on the Penn Relays website.
