PRINCETON, N.J. — Battling through blazing temperatures and the opening-day intensity of the Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Cornell women positioned themselves for a strong finish Saturday at Princeton University with six athletes advancing to Sunday finals, two podium finishes and a commanding start in the heptathlon competition.
Junior thrower Avery Hastings opened the scoring for the Big Red in the hammer throw, placing third with a mark of 56.92 meters. Freshman Gabriella Vizcarrondo delivered one of the breakout performances of the day, finishing sixth with a personal-best throw of 55.52 meters that broke the Cornell freshman record and moved her to No. 3 all-time in program history. Vizcarrondo entered the finals after uncorking a throw of more than four meters beyond her previous best in the third round of qualifying.
Cornell also found success in the field with junior Avery Hilliard earning runner-up honors in the pole vault after clearing a season-best 4.28 meters. Teammate Lauren Cashman added points with a sixth-place finish at 3.88 meters.
The Big Red carried momentum onto the track, where sophomore Fiona Lee secured a place in the 1500-meter final after clocking a personal-best 4:25.74 in the preliminary round. Freshman Divine Bamgboye also advanced, posting a time of 13.85 in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries.
In the 400 meters, juniors Francine Stevens and Rachel Bethke both punched tickets to Sunday's final. Stevens crossed in 54.53 seconds, while Bethke followed closely behind in 54.68.
Cornell's middle-distance group added another pair of finalists in the 800 meters as senior Katja Jackson qualified in 2:08.20 and freshman Sophia Comfere advanced with a 2:08.67 effort.
Senior Paula-Marie Brown paced the heptathlon standings after four events, sitting atop the leaderboard with 2,533 points heading into Sunday's final three disciplines. Brown highlighted her opening day with a 13.77 finish in the 100-meter hurdles, moving her to No. 5 all-time in Cornell history. She also recorded marks of 1.73 meters in the high jump, 11.54 meters in the shot put and 25.37 in the 200 meters.Sophomore Rikki Carver remained firmly in contention in sixth place with 2,288 points. Her day included marks of 14.90 in the hurdles, 1.55 meters in the high jump, 10.40 meters in the shot put and 25.98 in the 200.
Brown added another strong showing in the long jump, placing sixth with a personal-best leap of 6.13 meters, while Elizabeth Graham posted a personal-best 5.78 meters to finish 10th.
Junior Elise Sawyer rounded out Cornell's day in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries, clocking 1:01.15 to take eighth.
"Overall they battled really well in the heat and chaos of Heps," Cornell head coach Mike Henderson said. "We are excited to have multiple finalists in several events tomorrow and looking forward to another great day of competition."
