ITHACA, N.Y. — Casey Jones '90, the Jay R. Bloom '77 Head Coach of Men's Ice Hockey, and the Cornell men's hockey program announced Friday morning (June 26) the nine-player incoming class that will join the Big Red program for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
"We are excited to welcome this recruiting class to Cornell Hockey," Jones said. "Across all positions, these young men exemplify the qualities we value most — character, work ethic, competitiveness, and a commitment to team success. Their individual abilities, combined with the intangibles that make our culture special, will enhance an already deep and competitive roster. We believe this class will have a significant impact on our program and help position us for sustained success moving forward."
Seven of the nine players entering the program will be freshmen, while the other two are transferring to Cornell. One will have two years of eligibility remaining and the other with three. All players will be immediately eligible to play this season.
The incoming players consist of six forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender. Five players are from the United States (two from Illinois and one each from Minnesota, New Jersey, and Texas), three players hail from Canada (one each from British Columbia, Ontario, and Québec), while the other is a native of Russia.

Charlie Arend (Dubuque Fighting Saints)

- Posted 43 points (18-25—43) in 52 regular-season games with USHL's Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2025-26, where he served as alternate captain and also had three assists in five playoff games in 2025-26.
- Spent three seasons with Dubuque, amassing 87 points (34-53—87) over 161 career regular-season games and seven points (1-6—7) in 21 playoff contests. He aided Dubuque to its appearance in 2024 Clark Cup Final.
- Played two games with NAHL's Springfield Jr. Blues in 2022-23.
- Won 2022 US 15U Nationals Tier I championship with Chicago Mission 15U AAA.
- Will be enrolling in the SC Johnson College of Business.
Coaching staff on Arend: "Charlie comes to Cornell from the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the USHL. He spent three years in Dubuque and last served as an alternate captain. He played for the Chicago Mission program in Chicago prior to Dubuque. Charlie is an excellent two-way player who fits our style and will be a big help to our team this upcoming season."

- Played 161 career games with Spokane from 2023-26, collecting 75 points (37-38—75). Aided Spokane to 2025 Western Conference championship title.
- Spent 2022-23 season with BCHL's Coquitlam Express, posting 27 points (11-16—27) over 50 games.
- Will be enrolling in the SC Johnson College of Business.
Coaching staff on Armstrong: "Coco is a high-character and electric personality coming from Spokane in the WHL. Before his three years in Spokane, he spent a year in the BCHL playing for Coquitlam. He brings an all-around game and most importantly, a high compete and tenacity that we are thrilled to add to our lineup."
Brad Gardiner (Barrie Colts)

- Served as an alternate captain with OHL's Barrie Colts in 2025-26, posting 65 points (31-34—65) while serving as one of three Colts players to play in all 67 regular-season games. Added 19 points (7-12—19) in 21 playoff games with Colts, which won the Bobby Orr Trophy (OHL's Eastern Conference title) and appeared in OHL Championship Series for first time since 2013.
- Logged 38 points (18-20—38) in 66 games with Barrie in 2024-25 after playing first three OHL seasons with Ottawa 67s, where he accumulated 95 points (38-57—95) in 188 games between 2021-24.
- Collected 198 career points (87-111—198) in 321 regular-season games over five-year OHL career, chipping in 27 points (10-17—27) across 54 career playoff games.
- Attended St. Andrew's College for two years (2019-21), playing in two games during 2019-20 season.
- Selected in third round (79th overall) by Dallas in 2023 NHL Draft, but is currently an NHL free agent after Stars did not sign him.
- Father, Bruce, was a sixth-round draft pick by St. Louis (131rd overall) in 1991 NHL Draft. After his four-year college career at Colgate (1990-94) — where he served as captain in 1993-94 and had 103 points (51-52—103) in 116 games with Raiders — appeared in 312 NHL games with Ottawa, Tampa Bay, Columbus and New Jersey between 1996 and 2002, having 88 points (34-54—88).
Coaching staff on Gardiner: "Brad comes to Cornell after five seasons in the OHL. He started at St. Andrew's College, where his recruitment began, and many Cornell players have come through. He has been a prominent player in the OHL and had his best year this season having gone to the OHL Championship serving as alternate captain. He's a prototypical Cornell player playing the game honest, hard, and with excellent skill and hockey sense. We are very excited to have Brad join the program elevating forward group."
Cal Hughes (Erie Otters)

- Spent 2025-26 season with OHL's Erie Otters, posting 23 points (12-11—23) in 58 games.
- Split 2024-25 campaign between BCHL's West Kelowna Warriors and Erie, combining for 37 points (21-16—37) in 65 games.
- Earned BCHL All-Rookie Team honors in 2023-24 after having 42 points (23-19—42) with West Kelowna. Added nine points (3-6—9) in six playoff games.
- Earned bronze medal with Team USA at 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Břeclav and Trenčín, Czechia.
- Father, Ryan, was a second-round pick (22nd overall) by Québec Nordiques in 1990 NHL Draft and played four years of college hockey at Cornell (1989-93), amassing 131 points (46-85—131) in 112 games and served as a two-time captain of Big Red (1991-93) before playing professionally for four years (1994-98), highlighted by playing three NHL games with Boston Bruins in 1995-96.
- Uncle, Kent Hughes, just completed his fourth full season as general manager of Montréal Canadiens. Kent also played four collegiate seasons at Division III Middlebury (1988-92), accruing 194 points (54-140—194) in 100 career games with Panthers.
- Cousins Riley (2019-23) and Jack Hughes (2021-25) also both played college hockey. Riley spent four seasons at Northeastern (2019-23) before playing at Ohio State during the 2023-24 season. He spent this past season with the ECHL's Savannah Ghost Pirates. Jack spent two seasons each at Northeastern (2021-23) and Boston University (2023-25) and is playing with the AHL's Ontario Reign.

Coaching staff on Hughes: "Cal makes his way to Cornell after a season and a half with the Erie Otters in the OHL. Before Erie, he spent a year and a half with West Kelowna in the BCHL. He is an all-around forward with the ability to play anywhere in the forward lineup. We look forward to Cal bringing his game to Cornell as he fits every facet of the program."

- Played one game with USHL's Green Bay Gamblers in 2024-25 after spending two seasons playing prep hockey at Cushing Academy, registering 64 points (15-49—64) in 63 games while leading team to 2025 NESCAC Elite 8 championship.
- Fifth Texas native to suit to up for Cornell, joining David McKee (2003-06), Locke Jillson and Keir Ross (both 2008-12), and Armand de Swardt (2010-14).
- Will be enrolling in the College of Industrial and Labor Relations.
Coaching staff on Randle: "Ryland is a very cerebral and mobile puck-moving defensemen. He had a breakout year for Des Moines in the USHL this season. Before Des Moines, he spent two years at Cushing Academy, after time with the Dallas Stars' elite programs. His all-around game and skating is a much-welcomed addition to our defensive group."
Mathis Rousseau (University of Maine)

- Spent first collegiate season at University of Maine, going 8-7-0 with a 2.59 goals-against average and .896 save percentage across 17 games (15 starts). Registered two shutouts, both coming in Hockey East competition against Boston College (Nov. 22, 2025 — 21 saves) and Northeastern (Feb. 27, 2026 — 25 saves).
- Split 2024-25 season between QMJHL's Halifax Mooseheads and Moncton Wildcats, combining for 20-20-5 record with 2.88 goals-against average and .905 save percentage, ranking 10th in goals-against average and ninth in save percentage among qualifying QMJHL goaltenders. Went 8-2-0 with a 2.53 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in 11 playoff games, aiding Moncton to its first Gilles-Courteau Trophy and Memorial Cup appearance since 2010.
- Made 30-plus saves in all four appearances during 2025 Memorial Cup, highlighted by making 45 saves in 3-2 overtime loss to OHL's London Knights in round-robin-opener (May 24, 2025).
- Named a QMJHL Second All-Star Team selection in 2023-24 after going 31-8-4 record with Halifax, having a 2.27 goals-against average and a QMJHL-leading .925 save percentage. Also had five points offensively (1-4—5), highlighted by scoring an empty-net goal against Rouyn-Noranda (Oct. 20, 2023), becoming the first Mooseheads goaltender to score a goal in a game in franchise history.
- Played in five games with Team Canada at 2024 IIHF World Junior Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, going 3-2-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. One of three victories came during a 22-save shutout in 10-0 win over Latvia (Dec. 27, 2023).
- Across four-year QMJHL career (2021-25), went 104-37-11 in 170 regular-season games and had a 2.70 goals-against average and .911 save percentage. Logged 24-14-2 record with a 2.74 goals-against average and .914 save percentage across 41 playoff appearances.
Coaching staff on Rousseau: "Mathis had a high-end junior hockey career in the Quebec Maritime Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), having played the majority of his time for Halifax and moving to Moncton where he won the QMJHL Championship. He also played for Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships. We are excited for Mathis to join our goaltending group and expect him to be a big part of our program moving forward."

- Spent two seasons with Sioux City Musketeers (2023-25), combining for six points (1-5—6) over 43 games.
- Won gold medal with Team USA at 2025 World Junior 'A' Challenge in Trois-Rivières, Québec.
- Named to USHL All-Academic Team for 2024-25 season.
- Ranked as No. 96 North American skater by NHL Central Scouting entering 2026 NHL Draft.
- Will be enrolling in the SC Johnson College of Business.
Coaching staff on Tuminaro: "Cole brings a big presence to our lineup as is a mobile puck-moving defensemen who will cover a lot of ice defending with his reach and body. He comes to Cornell from the USHL, where he played for Sioux City and Chicago. He brings a lot of value to our defensive group with his ability to play a hard-nosed defensive game while also bringing the ability to jump into plays and contribute an all-around game."
Louie Wehmann (Penticton Vees)

- Accrued 37 points (18-19—37) over 68 games with Penticton Vees in franchise's inaugural WHL season in 2025-26.
- Split 2024-25 season between Penticton (then in BCHL) and USHL's Youngstown Phantoms, collecting 27 points (15-12—27) in 47 games.
- Played in 32 games with NAHL's St. Cloud Norsemen in 2023-24, where he had 16 points (6-10—16).
- Earned four varsity letters in hockey at Providence Academy, where he was a two-time captain (2022-24) and three-time All-Conference selection (2022-24).
- Finalist for 2024 Mr. Hockey award, presented to Minnesota's top high school hockey player after having 68 points (48-20—68) in 26 games. Logged 81 points (44-37—81) in 26 games during 2022-23 season at Providence Academy.
- Currently serves as Providence Academy's all-time leader in goals (129), assists (88) and points (217).
- Also earned four varsity letters in tennis, where he was an All-Conference selection as a freshman and participated in 2024 state tournament in doubles.
- Will be enrolling in the SC Johnson College of Business.
Coaching staff on Wehmann: "Louie comes to Cornell from Penticton in the WHL and before that he spent time in the USHL with Youngstown. He is a power forward possessing all-around ability in his game, which is a huge boost to our lineup. His ability to play any style and bring production is one we are very excited about."
Ivan Zadvernyuk (Brown University)

- Posted 32 points (11-21—32) in 62 career games with Bears, highlighted by having team-leading 22 points (8-14—22) and serving as Brown's only player with 10-plus assists in 2025-26.
- Played two seasons with NAHL's Lone Star Brahmas from 2022-24, serving as alternate captain in 2023-24. Collected 86 points (27-59—86) in 116 regular-season games with Lone Star and added 14 points (8-6—14) in 16 playoff games.
- First Team All-NAHL selection and was a finalist for NAHL MVP in 2023-24 after finishing tied for eighth in assists and ninth in points after having 64 points (21-43—64) in 59 regular-season games, guiding Brahmas to 2024 Robertson Cup title. Also was named to NAHL (South) All-Star Team.
- Second Russian player in Big Red history, joining Max Andreev (2018-23).
- Will be enrolling in the College of Arts and Sciences.
