COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Charlotte Glasper's second-half goal proved to be the difference as Indiana held off Cornell for a 2-1 win on Friday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field, part of a neutral-site slate hosted by Ohio State. Indiana improved to 3-2 and captured its third straight victory, while Cornell fell to 1-3.
The Hoosiers struck early when Theresa Ricci converted a feed from Molly Stutte just 1:39 into the game, and the 1-0 lead held into the second half despite relatively even play for the rest of the first half-hour. Cornell tied it in the third quarter when junior Uma Käding blasted home a penalty corner off a feed from Ashley Plzak and a strong stop by Rease Coleman at 36:16, knotting the score at 1-1. It was Käding's second goal of the season after scoring in the opener.
The tie was short-lived, however. Glasper put Indiana back in front for good at 44:01, scoring unassisted after a takeaway in the Big Red's defensive half to make it 2-1, and the Hoosiers' defense closed out the final period to preserve the win.
Indiana held the edge in shots, 14-8, and shots on goal, 8-4, with goalkeeper Isa Smulders turning away two shots to secure the win. Junior Martha Broderick made six saves in goal for Cornell. The big Red held a narrow 5-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Cornell returns to action when it faces Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 12 p.m. on B1G+.
