Virginia McMunigal Career Statistics
McMunigal moved into a starting role as a junior and saw her numbers increase substantially. A player with the ability to score in a variety of ways, she should take an even greater role in the Big Red offense during her final season.
At Cornell
McMunigal saw action in all 26 games during her junior season, making 20 starts and averaging nearly 30 minutes per contest. She finished the year ranked fourth on the team in both scoring (8.2 ppg) and rebounding (3.9 rpg.). She scored in double-figures on eight occasions and led the Big Red in scoring in four contests. McMunigal had the best weekend of her career vs. Yale (Feb. 20) and Brown (Feb. 21), posting a then career-high 20 points against the Bulldogs before surpassing that with a 24-point performance the next night against the Bears. She finished the season as one of the best 3-point shooters in the Ivy League, ranking first on the team and fourth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (.370), as well as first on the team and fifth in the conference in 3-point field goals made per game (1.8). Her 47 treys on the season are good for sixth in Cornell history for 3-point field goals in a single season and her 73 career 3-pointers rank her 16th in Big Red history. McMunigal saw action in 27 games during her sophomore season, averaging 13.7 minutes per contest. During the year, she averaged 4.9 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. McMunigal proved to be a consistent shooter, connecting on .393 percent from the floor, .351 from beyond the arc and .862 from the charity stripe. She scored in double-figures three times and led the Big Red in scoring on two occasions, including a then career-high 16 points vs. Yale on Feb. 2. She had one of her most complete games at Columbia on Jan. 26, leading the Big Red with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals in a career-high 26 minutes of action. McMunigal also ended the season strong, scoring six points in just 10 minutes of action vs. No. 1 Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA tournament. As a rookie, McMunigal saw action in 21 games, averaging 9.0 minutes per contest. She led the Big Red in scoring with a season-high nine points vs. Davidson, and matched that with a nine-point performance vs. Binghamton. She averaged 2.4 points per game and converted 40 percent from 3-point range (6-of-15).
At William Penn Charter
McMunigal was a four-year letter winner at the William Penn Charter School and reached the 1,000-point plateau in her junior season. She served as team captain as a senior and was named her team’s MVP twice. McMunigal was a four-time all-league selection and ranked in the top-20 for scoring in southeastern Pa., as a sophomore, junior and senior. She helped to lead her AAU team, the Delaware Valley Comets, to a second-place finish at regionals and a nationals appearance in both 2005 and 2006. McMunigal was also an all-league soccer player for the Quakers.
Personal
Virginia Ware McMunigal is the daughter of Phillip and Laura McMunigal and is enrolled in Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences. Her father was a member of the swimming team at North Carolina. She has one brother, Will.
