Biography

Senior Season - 2010-11
Hughes experienced a breakout season as a senior, appearing in 34 games and scoring 35 points on 17 goals and 18 assists, both career highs and both numbers more than her career totals entering her final season. She had 11 multi-point games on the year, including back-to-back three-point contests on Nov. 5 and 6 against Harvard and Dartmouth, scoring two goals and adding four assists to earn her first career ECAC Hockey Player of the Week award. She added another award to that one after the league championship, when she collected five points on three goals and two assists in the semifinals and championship to earn a spot on the ECAC Hockey all-tournament team. After missing out on much of the playoffs as a junior, she has made up for lost time as a senior, scoring seven points in the Big Red’s six playoff games on three goals and four assists, including recording at least one point in four of the last five games.

Junior Season - 2009-10
Hughes appeared in all but five games for the Big Red, missing each of the last five contests. She scored six goals and added three assists for nine points, scoring one point in nine different games. She scored her first point of the season with a goal against Union on Nov. 6, then added the game-winner the following night in a 3-1 victory against Rensselaer. She scored a goal against Brown on Dec. 5 and at Providence on Jan. 9 before picking up her first assist of the year in a 2-2 tie at St. Lawrence on Jan. 29. Of the last six games she appeared in, she had one point in four of those, collecting two goals and two assists over that span.

Sophomore Season - 2008-09
Hughes battled injuries during her second season at Cornell, limiting her to just 17 games in the lineup. She scored a pair of goals and had an assist for three points, but did not play after early January. She tallied her first goal of the season in a loss to Robert Morris on Nov. 1, then struck for a goal in the Big Red's 4-1 win over Providence on Jan. 5. Her lone assist came on Nov. 21 at Dartmouth in a 5-4 Cornell loss.

Freshman Season - 2007-08
To cap off an impressive freshman season, Hughes was the only Big Red player to score goals in both of Cornell’s ECAC Hockey quarterfinal games against Harvard. For the season, Hughes recorded four goals and eight assists for 12 points. On Nov. 3 against Niagara, she scored her first career goal while adding an assist in Cornell’s 6-2 victory. She notched her second multi-point contest in the Big Red’s 7-4 win against Princeton on Nov. 16.

Before Cornell
Hughes finished second in scoring for the Toronto Aeros and in the top 20 in the league. She led Markham-Stouffville to three provincial gold medals and took the gold medal at the Provincial Women’s Hockey League championships in 2007. Hughes was named a Metro Toronto first-team all-star in 2007 and was an honoree in 2006. She captained her high school team her junior and senior seasons and was a two-time captain for the Markham-Stouffville Stars. At Stouffville District Secondary School, Hughes also played volleyball and soccer.

Personal
Hayley Alyssa Hughes is the daughter of Heidi and Bob Hughes. She has an older brother and a younger sister. Her brother, Bobby, was a 2006 Carolina Hurricanes draft pick. Hughes is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
