At Cornell
In his second year with the program, MacFarlane became a starter and one of the team's top players on the defensive line in 2009. In eight contests, MacFarlane posted 20 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks. He also forced a fumble against Princeton to go along with 2.0 tackles for loss against the Tigers. MacFarlane had six tackles, with 3.5 TFL, in the win over Bucknell. MacFarlane played as a freshman on the junior varsity team. He will have an opportunity to compete for a role on the defense. MacFarlane is enrolled in the College of Engineering.

At Verona Area
MacFarlane helped lead Verona Area HS to a pair of conference titles, capturing second-team all-league honors as both a junior and senior. He was a two-year letter winner and starter who served as team captain in his final season. MacFarlane was part of a state semifinalist squad as a senior. He also lettered twice in lacrosse.
