Career: Benson was a three-time All-Ivy selection, having been named honorable mention as a sophomore and second team as a junior and senior. She left East Hill with her name inscribed all over the Cornell record book, graduating as the all-time leader in career assists (515), career games played (109), career minutes played (3,544) and career games started (97). She also holds the Big Red record for assists in a single season (156), assists in a single game (12), and career assist average (4.7). She is the only player in the history of the Cornell women’s basketball program to tally at least 700 points, 500 assists, 300 rebounds and 100 steals in her career, and leaves the program ranking in the top-20 of 12 statistical categories.
Senior (2009-10): Benson started all 27 games as a senior captain, averaging 32.9 minutes per outing. She finished the season ranked second in the Ivy League and 13th in the nation with 5.7 assists per game to along with 7.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest. Benson ended the 2009-10 season with 153 assists, just three assists shy of her own school record which she set during the 2007-08 campaign when the Big Red registered 122 more field goals. She broke the all-time career assist record at Brown on Feb. 6 and set Cornell’s single-game assist record with 12 vs. Tennessee State on Nov. 21. She scored in double-digits on nine occasions and led the Big Red in scoring in three games. She posted a team-high in assists in 24-of-27 games, and led the team in rebounding three times.
Junior (2008-09): A second-team All-Ivy selection as a junior, Benson led the team and ranked second in the Ivy League in assists per game (5.2) during the 2008-09 season. She also finished the year ranked third on the team in points per game (10.1) and rebounds per game (3.9). Her 134 assists on the season ranked third all-time in Cornell’s single-season assist records. She registered Cornell’s first point-assist double-double in over a decade with 12 points and 10 assists against Dartmouth on Feb. 27. She registered double-digits in 16 games, including the final five contests of the season. She led the Big Red in scoring on six occasions – Duquesne (11), IUPUI (19), Binghamton (14), Bryant (19), Brown (career-high 20) and Princeton (9). Benson handed out at least six assists on 10 occasions, including a career-best 10 helpers against both Albany and Dartmouth on Feb. 27. She also registered at least five rebounds in 13 contests, pulling down a career-high nine vs. Binghamton. She was named Ivy League Player of the Week on Feb. 2 after leading the Big Red to a sweep over Brown and Yale. Against the Bears, she registered a team-high 20 points, while handing out five assists and playing a full 40 minutes. The next night against the Bulldogs, Benson scored 15 points, 11 of which came during the crucial first half, as she finished the day going 4-for-6 from the floor, including an perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range, while handing out a team-high four assists, grabbing three rebounds and coming up with two steals.
Sophomore (2007-08): Benson was named honorable mention All-Ivy following her sophomore season after leading the conference and ranking 24th in the nation in assists per game (5.4). Benson was also among the Ivy League leaders in 3-point field goal percentage (.462 – first), assist/turnover ratio (1.44 – second) and 3-point field goals made (1.25 – 10th). She set the Cornell single-season assists record (156) and moved up to ninth-place in career assists (228). Benson also led the team and finished ranked second all-time in Cornell history for minutes played in a season (1,008) after starting all 29 games and playing a full 40 minutes on four occasions. She finished the year ranked fourth on the team in rebounds (3.5), and fifth in points per game (6.9). She established a then career-high with eight assists in the first game of the season against Long Island, only to surpass that mark with nine assists vs. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. An intelligent playmaker, Benson handed out at least six assists in 17 contests during the year. She led the Big Red in scoring on two occasions, including a then career-high 15-point performance vs. Lafayette. She matched that outing with 15 points and a game-high seven assists vs. Harvard on Feb. 15 and one week later, she scored 15 points again in Cornell’s victory over Yale.
Freshman (2006-07): Benson saw action in all 27 games during her rookie season and became a starter as the Ivy League season opened, earning 15 starts on the year. Benson handed out at least three assists in 13 games and finished the year ranked first on the team and 10th in the conference with 2.7 assists per game. She tallied a season-high seven assists vs. NJIT and dished out six helpers vs. Radford, Ithaca and Harvard. Benson earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors on Jan. 29 and Feb. 19. The first award came after she tallied seven points, five rebounds and six assists while committing only one turnover vs. Columbia on Jan. 27. The second award came after an outstanding weekend in which she registered career-highs in both points (13) and rebounds (8), while handing out four assists as the Big Red defeated Princeton on Feb. 16 and then scored eight points, grabbed two rebounds, handed out three assists and came up with one steal vs. Penn on Feb. 17.
At Benet Academy
A four-year letter winner at Benet Academy, Benson played point guard for the Lady Redwings and holds the school’s assist record. She, along with Cornell classmate Molly McGue, helped Benet Academy to four-straight regional championships (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006) and two sectional titles (2003 and 2004). Benson served as team captain as a senior and was named a conference all-star and all-area, following a sophomore season in which she earned Street and Smith’s honorable mention honors. Benson was also a conference champion tennis player, earning third-team all-state honors in the process, and was nominated for the 2006 Wendy’s High School Heisman award.
Personal
Lauren Elizabeth Benson is the daughter of Don and Joan Benson and is enrolled in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She has an older brother, Brett, and an older sister, Kristen.
