Biography
As a junior
Helmer returned to the Big Red roster with a strong defensive season, playing in 14 games as a steady presence in the backfield. She recorded four ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers in her junior campaign. She had a season-best two ground balls at Penn in March, and she had two caused turnovers in the season-opening game at Canisius in late February. She had two draw controls against No. 7 Penn State in March in a huge victory for Cornell.
As a sophomore
Helmer did not play for Cornell in 2012.
As a freshman
Helmer saw action in nine contests with three starts before missing the rest of the season with an injury. She posted five caused turnovers and three ground balls during the season. Helmer saw her first collegiate action against Rutgers, then made her first varsity start a week later against Colgate.
At Fayetteville-Manlius HS
Helmer was a two-time first-team All-Central New York selection at Fayetteville-Manlius HS. A four-year letter winner and three-year starter, Helmer was a two-year captain and three-time all-league selection. She was part of two sectional runner-up squads and earned the team's Defensive MVP honor. As a junior, Helmer participated in the Under Armour All-America Underclassmen Games and played for the New York squad in both the 2008 and 2009 national tournaments. Helmer was given the David Volles Memorial Award as the most valauble lacrosse player at Fayetteville-Manlius HS in 2010. Helmer also competed in track and field and field hockey. She earned second-team all-state accolades as a senior in field hockey and helped her track team to a sectional crown and three league titles.
Personal
Margaret Mary Helmer is the daughter of Stephen and Susan Helmer and has an older brother and two older sisters. Her father, Stephen (baseball, LeMoyne), brother, John (football, Union) and sister, Maura (rowing, Syracuse) all competed in college athletics, while her sister Caroline (Cacki) was a member and captain of the Big Red lacrosse team until she graduated in 2012. Her grandfather, Frank Lasch, is a 1957 graduate of Cornell Law School. She is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
