Biography
Senior Season - 2011-12
Young played in every game for the Big Red in her final season, earning one goal and 16 assists as one of Cornell’s five defensemen. Her goal came against No. 5 Boston University on Nov. 26, and it was the game-winner. She earned two assists in three different games this year (Oct. 25 at Colgate, Oct. 29 vs. Brown, Feb. 25 vs. Brown) and was a +5 against Brown on Oct. 29.
Junior Season - 2010-11
Young collected a spot on the ECAC Hockey all-tournament team for her play in the postseason, collecting three points in the tournament while playing strong defense for the Big Red. Young was a key part of the Big Red’s defense that led the nation in scoring defense, while also seeing key time on the power-play and penalty-killing units that have been among the national leaders. Young finished the season on a five-game point-scoring streak, collecting an assist in each of the final five games. Young missed three games due to injury on the year and finished with two goals and 14 assists for 16 points.
Sophomore Season - 2009-10
Young was in the lineup for every game as a sophomore, scoring seven points on two goals and five assists. She was selected to represent ECAC Hockey in an all-star game against the U.S. Olympic Team in early January. She picked a great time for her first career multi-point game, scoring a pair of assists in the Big Red's win over Harvard in the NCAA tournament. Both of her goals during the season came on the power play, including her first career goal on Jan. 23 against Colgate.
Freshman Season - 2008-09
Young appeared in 23 games as a freshman for the Big Red, finishing second among all Cornell defensemen with 11 points, all on assists. Young opened her collegiate career with a bang, picking up three assists in Cornell's 7-1 victory over Vermont on Oct. 24. She capped her weekend with another assist against the Catamounts the following night. Young added another multi-point game on Nov. 8 against Quinnipiac, tallying two assists against the Bobcats in a 2-2 tie.
Before Cornell
Young played with current teammate Kendice Ogilvie on both the Red Deer Chiefs and Team Alberta. During the 2007-08 season, she was the top-scoring defenseman in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League. Young served as captain of the Red Deer Chiefs, and she was a member of the gold medal team at the Alberta provincial tournament. In 2008, she led her team to a silver medal at the Canadian Western tournament where she was named the tournament’s best defenseman and was named a first-team all-star.
Personal
Amanda Irene Young is the daughter of Terry and Charlene Young and has an older brother, Jeff, who played a season of hockey at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in 2007-08. She is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
