Senior Season — 2012-13
Once again, Axell was a workhorse for the Big Red through the first 32 games of the season before an injury forced him to miss the final two games of an ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series at Quinnipiac. One of the team's tri-captains, Axell enjoyed a career year offensively, quadrupling his goal total with three goals — all in a span of five weeks. His first goal came on Nov. 24 in the Big Red's 5-1 victory over Michigan at sold-out Madison Square Garden in New York, then he scored a goal in each of the Big Red's games at the Florida College Hockey Classic in late December. All of the goals were part of a five-game scoring streak, which was the team's longest of the season until March. Axell had his first career two-assist game on March 9 in Game 2 of the ECAC Hockey Championship first-round series sweep of Princeton.
Junior Season — 2011-12
Axell was one of nine Big Red players to appear in all 35 games, but he had a tough road to do so. After the season, he received the team's Iron Man Award, presented to the player who showed determination to overcome injuries. He accumulated a career-high four points while serving as one of the team's primary penalty killers. All four of his assists were of the primary variety, including one on Locke Jillson's goal in Game 2 of an ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series sweep of Dartmouth in early March at Lynah Rink.
Sophomore Season — 2010-11
Axell appeared in 18 games as a sophomore, collecting a goal and an assist for two points on 13 shots. He scored his first collegiate goal on Jan. 22 in a 5-2 victory against Colgate at Lynah Rink and tallied an assist in the loss to Harvard on Feb. 18. His goal against the Raiders stood as the game-winner. Axell finished the season with a +3 rating and six penalty minutes.
Freshman Season —2009-10
Axell appeared in 10 games for the Big Red, picking up a trio of assists on the season. He made his collegiate debut in the season opener against Niagara on Oct. 30, and scored his first career point on Nov. 24 against Colgate. Axell then added a point in the win against Brown on Feb. 12, and capped his season scoring with an assist in the 5-4 loss at Dartmouth on Feb. 20. For the season, he finished with six penalty minutes and had a -1 rating.
