Biography

Senior Season — 2011-12
Whitney evolved into a solid all-around defenseman and, alongside Braden Birch, was often matched up against the opposition’s top lines. The pairing didn't surrendered a five-on-five goal until Jan. 28. Offensively, Whitney came scored both of his goals on the season in the ECAC Hockey quarterfinal sweep of Dartmouth in early March. The first goal came 17 minutes, 40 seconds into double overtime of Game 1 in what was at the time the longest game ever played at Lynah Rink. Whitney then capped the scoring in a 3-0 shutout of Dartmouth the next night with another long-range shot that sailed into the top portion of the net. His plus-10 rating on the year was the highest of his career, and his total of 11 points tied a career high.

Junior Season - 2010-11
Whitney set a career high for games played as a junior, appearing in 27 of the Big Red's contests on the blue line. He was third among all defensemen in +/-, finishing the year at +3. He finished the season with five points on two goals and three assists, with one of those goals serving as the game-winner during the ECAC Hockey semifinal victory against Dartmouth on March 18. Whitney also scored a goal against Quinnipiac on Nov. 12, while adding an assist in the season opener against New Hampshire on Oct. 29. He added an assist in the decisive game three of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals against Quinnipiac on March 13 and also had one helper in the victory at Rensselaer on Feb. 12.

Sophomore Season - 2009-10
Whitney established himself as a regular on the Cornell blue line as a sophomore, appearing in 25 games and scoring 11 points on three goals and eight assists. He saw extensive time on the power play, quarterbacking the Big Red's top power-play unit. Whitney had an assist in each of his first three games of the season and scored his first goal of the year on Nov. 28 against Boston University at Madison Square Garden. He had a goal and an assist in the 3-3 tie against the Terriers, finishing the fall semester with one goal and six assists. Whitney then scored his second goal of the season on a breakaway at Colgate on Feb. 16, and added his third goal of the season in the ECAC Hockey championship game agaisnt Union on March 20. Whitney finished the season with a +4 rating and 10 minutes worth of penalties.

Freshman Season - 2008-09
Whitney had a productive freshman season, appearing in 14 games and collecting three assists on the year. He made his collegiate debut in the win against North Dakota on Nov. 29, and tallied his first career point a month later on Dec. 27 against St. Cloud State. Whitney made his playoff debut and scored his first career playoff point in the ECAC Hockey semifinals against Princeton, then appeared in both games of the NCAA Midwest Regional.

Before Cornell
Whitney spent two seasons at Cushing Academy. In his first season at Cushing, he played in 29 games, scoring four goals and tallying 17 assists for 21 points. Whitney followed that up with 10 goals and 12 assists as a senior at Cushing, bringing his two-year total at the New England prep school to 14 goals and 19 assists.

Personal
Sean Robert Whitney is the son of Daniel and Susan Whitney, and he has two older brothers. His oldest brother, Ryan, is a defenseman for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League. Whitney is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
