Biography
Junior Season — 2012-13
Iyer anchored the top singles spot for a second straight season, posting a 7-12 record. He was 2-5 in Ivy League play, recording three-set victories against Brown's Michael Riechmann and Penn's Nikola Kocovic. Iyer won his first two matches against ranked opponents, defeating George Washington's Francisco Dias (ranked 76th) on Jan. 26 and Buffalo's Vusa Hove (ranked 123rd) on Feb. 10. He also competed exclusively at the No. 1 position in doubles, where he was 11-9 overall and 11-7 when partnered with sophomore Alex Sidney. Among the duo's most impressive victories was an 8-4 triumph over 20th-ranked Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur, of Columbia, during the finals of the ECAC Indoor Championships — which the host Big Red won. ... Iyer saw limited action in the fall due to injury, winning two of his four singles matches two of his three doubles matches paired with freshman Dragos Dima.
Sophomore Season — 2011-12
Iyer emerged as the team's primary competitor at No. 1 singles, where he posted an overall record of 10-11 in dual matches and a 2-5 mark in league play on his way to an All-Ivy League Second Team selection. His league victories came consecutively against Dartmouth's Michael Laser on April 8 and Brown's Soufin Azargui on April 14, with both opponents later also being named to the All-Ivy Second Team. He started the season with a 6-2 record in fall tournament play, with both losses coming to St. John's Vlad Mladenov — who finished the season ranked 76th in the country. Iyer advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship in October and was ranked fourth in the Northeast Region by the ITA heading into dual season. Iyer was equally as strong in fall doubles play, going 6-1 alongside Alex Sidney. The pair won the B Bracket at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational and was ranked as high as 35th in the nation by the ITA in early January.
Freshman Season — 2010-11
Iyer saw limited action as a rookie, but had great success in his matches. He finished the year with a 4-1 record overall, with his lone loss coming in the NCAA tournament, and was a perfect 2-0 in Ivy League action. Iyer also won the only doubles match her competed in on the year.
Before Cornell
As a junior player, Iyer achieved a 127 ITF junior ranking, winning Junior ITF tournaments in 2006 and 2009. As a 15-year old in 2006, he captured the Indian National Boys 18s doubles championship and represented India in the Junior Davis Cup. That same year he was also ranked No. 2 in the Boys 18s in the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section.
Personal
Iyer is the son of Param and Indira Iyer. His older sister, Tara, was a member of the Duke women’s tennis team, winning a team nation championship with the Blue Devils on 2009. She went on to play professionally and has been ranked as high as 350th in the WTA world rankings. Iyer is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
