Biography
At Cornell
Junior (2013): O’Neil saw action in all 18 games, making eight starts on the first offensive midfield before making the move to the defensive midfield. He registered four goals and two assists on the season. O’Neil had his best offensive game against Colgate, scoring two goals and registering one assist against the Raiders. He also scored against Canisius and Yale and had an assist against Binghamton. O’Neil picked up 16 ground balls and caused two turnovers. Healso won 8-of-18 face offs (.444), including perfect 2-for-2 performances against Colgate and Virginia.
Sophomore (2012): O’Neil saw action in 12 games during his sophomore season, running on the Big Red’s second offensive midfield. He finished the year with four goals, one assist and five ground balls. O’Neil tallied a season-high two scores against Canisius.
Freshman (2011): O’Neil saw significant playing time during his rookie season as a member of the Big Red’s first offensive midfield. He was named to the 2011 Inside Lacrosse All-Freshman first team after playing in all 17 games and finishing the year with 15 goals and 13 assists. O’Neil posted a season-high three goals against Yale in the Ivy League tournament semifinal and registered at least one point in 12-of-17 contests. He also tallied 16 ground balls and two caused turnovers on the season.
At Fayetteville-Manlius HS
A high school All-American, O’Neil lettered three times at Fayetteville-Manlius high school. He finished his career with 87 goals and 46 assists and helped the Hornets to back-to-back league championships. As a senior captain, he was named a first-team All-CNY selection after earning second-team honors as a junior. O’Neil was also a two-time first-team all-league selection. He also lettered three times in basketball and twice in football, serving as captain of both teams during his senior season. O’Neil was a two-time first-team all-league selection in football, as well as a second-team All-CNY selection.
Personal
Michael Scott O’Neil is the son of Scott and Christine O’Neil and he has one older and one younger sister. His older sister Aly '12 was a member of the Big Red women’s lacrosse team and his younger sister Hilary plays lacrosse at Cortland. Both of his parents graduated from Cornell in 1986. His father was a two-time All-Ivy and All-East wrestler and team captain for the Big Red, while his mother played both field hockey and lacrosse at Cornell. One uncle, Geoff Hall, played lacrosse at Cornell, while another, Shawn O’Neil, wrestled on East Hill. Both his grandfather (Tom Hall, lacrosse at Cortland) and uncle (Jack O’Neil, wrestling at Rider) also were collegiate athletes. O’Neil’s grandfather Tom Hall founded the Fayetteville-Manlius high school lacrosse team in the 1960s. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
