Biography

Edmonton Oilers
2012 NHL Draft
6th Round 153rd Overall
Senior Season — 2014-15
In his second season as captain, McCarron led the team with a whopping 93 shots on frame, including 13 during Cornell’s opening weekend series against Omaha. McCarron was instrumental in Cornell’s Frozen Apple victory over Penn State at Madison Square Garden, when he notched an assist on all three Big Red goals in a 3-1 victory. His first goal of the season came on the power play against Colgate midway through the final stanza in a 2-2 tie against the Raiders on Jan. 31. He would pick up the scoring again a few weeks later, when he tallied both Big Red goals against RPI on Feb. 20 — including the game-tying marker in the dying moments of the third period. McCarron finished his collegiate career by playing in the most games among his classmates (131) and never missing a game due to injury.

Junior Season — 2013-14
Serving as the team's sole captain (the first Cornell junior to make that claim since Stephen Bâby in 2001-02), McCarron was tied for second on the team in scoring with 24 points, coming on seven goals and 17 assists — which was also tied for the team lead. He was given All-Ivy League Honorable Mention. McCarron was particularly hot to start the season, posting 14 points over his first eight games. That included his first career three-point game Nov. 1 in the Big Red's 4-2 victory over Princeton in the teams' ECAC Hockey opener. McCarron then had seven points over a span of six games late in the season, including two assists in Game 1 of an ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series against Clarkson at Lynah Rink. Two of his seven goals on the season were scored on the power play, and he also registered a career-best plus-4 rating.

Sophomore Season — 2012-13
McCarron ranked fifth on the team with 19 points, matching his output from his freshman season. Once again, all of his goals came after the team's hiatus for the semester break. All but two of his points came in a 21-game span between the December break and his assist on Madison Dias' goal in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series on March 15 at Quinnipiac. He scored goals in both games of the Florida College Hockey Classic — giving the Big Red the lead against Ferris State on Dec. 28, then scoring the goal against Maine the following night that chased the Blackbears' starting goalie. Armed with one of the team's hardest shots, McCarron also pitched in two goals on the power play.

Freshman Season — 2011-12
McCarron made an immediate impact on a line with classmate Joel Lowry and senior Sean Collins. He found his goal-scoring touch after the new year, with five of his six markers coming in February and March. He got the Big Red on the board late in the first period of the team's victory over Michigan in the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinal on March 23 with his second power-play goal of the season. His first collegiate goal came in the first period of the Big Red’s 3-1 win on Jan. 6 at Colorado College on a blistering shot off the right wing after he won a one-on-one battle with a Tigers defenseman on the rush. McCarron then scored a goal in each of the team’s final regular-season games vs. Union and RPI in late February. McCarron was then selected as an overaged player in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. The Edmonton Oilers picked him up in the sixth round with the 153rd selection.

Before Cornell
McCarron spent parts of three seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL, appearing in 137 games over that span and serving as team captain during the 2010-11 season. He finished his final season in Lincoln with 57 points in 60 games (24-33) and helped his team clinch a berth in the playoffs. He finished tied for 12th in the league in scoring during the season and was named as one of the league’s mid-season all-stars in 2011. He also earned league offensive player of the week accolades on April 4, 2011. For his career in Lincoln, McCarron compiled 85 points on 33 goals and 52 assists in 137 games.

Personal
John Patrick McCarron is the son of David and Nancy McCarron and has an older sister and a younger brother. He is enrolled in the College of Human Ecology.
