2016-17 Men's Ice Hockey Roster
Biography
Senior Season — 2016-17
A preseason injury forced him to miss 10 of the team's first 11 games, but Kubiak returned to post 17 points on three goals and 14 assists through 25 games while serving as an alternate captain. His 61 career points led his class. Kubiak got hot when the team needed it most, recording nine points over the final nine games of the regular season — a stretch in which Cornell was undefeated (6-0-3). He then had assists on both of the winning goals in the ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series against Clarkson from March 10-12. After the season, Kubiak was presented with the Mark Weiss Memorial Award, which is given annually to a senior with a career-long dedication and passion for the sport of hockey. He also signed a professional contract through the 2017-18 season with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
Junior Season — 2015-16
Kubiak enjoyed a breakthrough campaign, leading the Big Red in scoring with 27 points on 10 goals and a team-best 17 assists. He also led the team with a plus-15 rating and four game-winning goals. The pivot of the 'JAM' line between freshmen wingers Mitch Vanderlaan and Anthony Angello, Kubiak was also solid in the faceoff circle with a 54.7 percent success rate on draws. Entering the season with 17 career points, Kubiak started the 2015-16 campaign with nine points over a six-game points streak — the program's longest since the middle of the 2013-14 season. Kubiak scored the winning goal against Princeton in the final minute of the third period on Nov. 6, then set up Angello's overtime winner Nov. 14 at Colgate. Kubiak's most memorable goal came on Dec. 28, when he potted a rebound of an Angello shot to lift the Big Red to an overtime victory over Providence — the undefeated defending national champion that was still undefeated at the time. Kubiak later scored the lone goal in a 1-0 road shutout of Dartmouth on Feb. 20 and scored goals in two of the Big Red's three ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series game at Quinnipiac.
Sophomore Season — 2014-15
The second season for Kubiak on the East Hill saw growth in his defensive game, winning 52 percent of his faceoffs on the season. Kubiak enjoyed a three-game scoring streak in November, when he assisted on goals against St. Lawrence (Nov. 15), Yale (Nov. 21) and Brown (Nov. 22), with all three points coming on the power play. His lone goal came in one of the team's rivalry games, as he tied the score at 2 in the third period of Cornell’s 3-3 tie at Harvard on Feb. 14.
Freshman Season — 2013-14
Kubiak won The Greg Ratushny Award at the team's postseason banquet, which is presented annually to the team's most promising rookie. He led the freshman class in scoring with one goal and eight assists for nine points over 30 games at both center and on the wing. He was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week on Feb. 3 after helping the Big Red to a big road sweep of Yale and Brown, posting a goal and two assists over the weekend. His first collegiate goal came against the Bulldogs, then he set up Matt Buckles' goal the following night at Brown.
Prior to Cornell
Kubiak joined the Big Red after two season in the United States Hockey League, where he had 20 goals and 24 assists for 44 points over 109 games. He spent a season and a half with the Chicago Steel — the same junior program that produced assistant coach Topher Scott ’08 — before a midseason trade landed him in Muskegon. He finished the 2012-13 season strong with the Lumberjacks, producing eight points in 20 regular-season games, and a goal and an assist in three playoff games. Kubiak also played in the 2012 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, where he scored the winning goal for Team East.
