Smith cemented her name in the Cornell record books during her senior season. She finished as the Big Red's leading take-away defender for the third consecutive year and set Cornell's single-season caused turnover record and led the Ivy League in that category for the second straight year (42). She started all 19 contests and registered at least one caused turnover in 18 of them while also picking up at least one ground ball in 17 contests. Smith also led Cornell in draw controls (47) and ground balls (45) and tallied at least two ground balls and two caused turnovers in eight games. She earned Ivy League Player of the Week Honors on March 5 after putting up four caused turnovers, one ground ball and two draw controls against Penn and then again on May 1 after five caused turnovers, three ground balls and one draw control against Harvard. Smith became just the second player in program history to reach 100 career caused turnovers and finished second all-time with 105. The 2017 tri-captain was the backbone of a Cornell defensive unit that continually ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense and never gave up more than 12 goals in a game for the first time since the 2003 season. On March 25 against Yale, Smith tallied her first career goal on a free-position attempt. At the conclusion of the season Smith, who was a 2017 Tewaraaton Award candidate, was named a IWLCA First-Team All-American, first-team All-Ivy, Ivy League All-Tournament Team honoree and earned the distinction of the Ivy League Defender of the Year and the ECAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year.
As a Junior (2016)
Smith was the leading take-away defender as the Big Red produced one of its best defensive seasons in recent memory. Starting in all 19 contests and rarely leaving the field, Smith set a new single-season program and led the Ivy League with 41 caused turnovers, blowing past the previous school record of 33. She caused a career-high six turnovers in a 14-5 win over Binghamton, and posted multiple caused turnovers on 12 occasions. She also finished second on the team with 36 ground balls, setting a career high with six in a 10-6 win over Yale. After helping Cornell become one of the top defenses in the country, holding its opponents to seven goals or fewer on 11 occasions, she was named First-Team All-Ivy, was an IWLCA Regional All-American and earned Third-Team IWLCA All-America honors.
