2016-17 Men's Ice Hockey Roster
Biography
Senior Season — 2016-17
McCarron served as an alternate captain, logging countless minutes on the blue line at even strength, on the power play and on the penalty kill. The leader among the team’s defensemen, McCarron finished second in team scoring with 25 points on six goals and 19 assists. His plus-11 rating was also tied for second-best on the squad, even though he was frequently matched up against the opposition’s top forwards. McCarron earned All-Ivy League second team recognition and was placed on the all-tournament team for the Florida College Hockey Classic. After the season, he was presented the team's Sam Woodside Award for overall career improvement by a senior after he doubled his career point total this season. He went on to sign a professional contract for the 2017-18 season with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.
Junior Season — 2015-16
McCarron was one of just two defensemen to appear in all 34 of the Big Red's games, recording a career-high 12 points on two goals and 10 assists. Both of his goals came in consecutive games against Colgate in November when he was a plus-5 on the weekend. He also added three games in which he recorded two assists, including the Red Hot Hockey game against Boston University on Nov. 28 at Madison Square Garden. McCarron continued to be a pivotal contributor of the Big Red's penalty-killing units.
Sophomore Season — 2014-15
McCarron fought through a late-season injury to log 23 games on the Big Red's blue line, scoring a goal to go with four assists for five points. He had an assist on a power-play goal in the first period of Cornell’s opener against Omaha on Oct. 31. He then notched his fourth career goal a week later at Princeton, scoring an extra-attacker goal late in the third period. All of McCarron’s five points came in the 11 games of the fall semester.
Freshman Season — 2013-14
McCarron played in all but one game during his collegiate debut, immediately logging significant power-play time. He scored three goals to go with five assists for eight points, which trailed Jeff Kubiak by one point for the scoring lead among the freshman class. McCarron had three assists in the team's first two games Oct. 25-26 at Nebraska-Omaha — all coming on the power play. He then scored his first collegiate goal Nov. 26 against Niagara, making a nice move to elude a would-be shot-blocker before snapping a shot low to the stick side late in the second period. The goal came four-on-four and turned out to be the game-winner. McCarron later scored the only goal in the team's Feb. 8 loss at Colgate, then scored the lone goal against Clarkson in Game 2 of the ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series March 15 at Lynah Rink.
Prior to Cornell
McCarron joins the Big Red after a very successful three-year stint with the St. Michael’s Buzzers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, where he was teammates with classmate Matt Buckles. McCarron served as the Buzzers’ captain in 2012-13, helping the team capture the OJHL championship while being named the league’s Defenseman of the Year and a first-team all star. McCarron was also the winner of the inaugural Canadian Junior Hockey League Defenseman of the Year honor, which was selected from a pool spanning all 10 of Canada’s Junior A leagues. He finished the season with nine goals and 49 assists for 58 points in just 52 games, leading the league in scoring by defensemen. McCarron represented Team Canada East in the 2012 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge and was named a member of the South Division All-Stars at the Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge. He also played lacrosse for St. Michael’s, helping the program win the provincial title in 2010.
