Biography
Senior Season — 2016-17
Casares Rosa played a pivotal role in the Big Red's success as part of the dominant lower portion of the team's singles lineup. He was a sterling 13-4 in singles, primarily from the No. 6 position, and he was undefeated in five No. 1 doubles matches when paired with classmate Chris Vrabel. Casares sailed to a 11-2 mark in non-league singles matches, then delivered one of the team's most memorable moments of the season when he locked up the clinching point in a 4-3 victory over Brown on April 23 to give the Big Red a share of the Ivy League title. He was 11-11 overall in doubles. ... In fall tournaments, Casares Rosa was 5-4 in singles and 3-5 in doubles. He advanced as far as the Round of 64 in the singles portion of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional.
Junior Season — 2015-16
Casares Rosa posted a 7-9 record in singles and 10-8 in doubles during dual matches, appearing a variety of positions in the lineup. Primarily from the middle of the order in singles, Casares Rosa finished the year strong on a four-match winning streak through Ivy League matches against Brown, Yale, Penn and Princeton. He clinched the match against the Bears on April 9 with a three-set victory from the No. 4 position. Casares Rosa was the only Big Red competitor to appear at all three positions in doubles, though all but one of his matches came from the Nos. 1 and 2 positions while teamed with Chris Vrabel. The duo went on a six-match winning streak to wrap up non-league play, then went 3-3 in Ivy League matches. ... In fall tournaments, Casares Rosa was 1-3 in singles and 0-1 in doubles.
Sophomore Season — 2014-15
Casares Rosa was named to the All-Ivy League Second Team for doubles after posting a solid 12-7 record while teaming with Chris Vrabel as the Big Red's exclusive entry at the No. 1 position in dual matches. They were an impressive 4-2 in Ivy League matches, including three victories against nationally-ranked tandems from Brown, Penn and Princeton. Casares Rosa was also 11-6 in singles from the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. He won six straight matches from Feb. 21 to March 22, including three-set victories against Penn State's Matt Barry and Erick Reyes of St. John's. Casares Rosa was 4-6 in singles and 6-3 in doubles during fall tournaments.
Freshman Season — 2013-14
Casares Rosa was tied for second on the team in singles victories in dual matches, posting an impressive 8-5 record from the top half of the order. He won his final three Ivy League matches, topping Brown's Will Spector in three sets on April 13 before defeating Princeton's Alex Day and Penn's Jeremy Courts in straight sets the following weekend — all from the No. 3 position. He won his only match against a ranked opponent, blasting VCU's Michael Voscek to the tune of a 6-0, 6-1 defeat on March 8, when Voscek was ranked 121st in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Casares Rosa was also 7-7 in doubles, most frequently pairing with Alex Sidney. He then teamed with classmate Colin Sinclair for the final six Ivy matches of the season, registering a 2-2 record from the No. 3 position. Casares Rosa was 4-5 in singles and 7-2 in doubles in fall tournament play. He and Sidney teamed up to win the 'B' bracket of the Ivy Plus Invitational on Sept. 22.
Prior to Cornell
Casares Rosa enters the Ivy League with the highest ATP ranking at 1,232. He brings a wealth of experience after competing at the Australian Open during his junior career. Originally from Ecuador, Casares has trained for the last four years in Brazil. "Casares Rosa is a fierce competitor and possibly one of the fittest guys out there," said Silviu Tanasoiu, the Director of Intercollegiate Tennis and the Savitt-Weiss Head Coach of Men's Tennis. "He is eager to make an impact for the Big Red and take this program to new heights."
Personal
Bernardo Casares Rosa is the son of Esteban Casares and Katia Lilian Rosa, and he has an older sister, Marie, who competes for the tennis team at Vanderbilt. He is enrolled in the College of Engineering.
