2017-18 Men's Ice Hockey Roster
Biography
Senior Season — 2017-18
Yates was tied for the team lead in goals (13) and scoring (26 points) while serving as an alternate captain. He scored the Big Red’s only goal in each of its final two games of the season, both in the ECAC Hockey semifinals against Princeton on March 16 and in the NCAA Northeast Region semifinals against Boston University on March 24. He started the year with three power-play goals in the first two games against Alabama-Huntsville. By season’s end, he brandished a plus-17 rating – tops among the team’s forwards. After the season, Yates was presented the team's Bill Doran Sportsmanship Award. He signed a professional contract for the 2018-19 with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.
Junior Season — 2016-17
Yates more than doubled his career point total and ranked fourth on the team with 22 points. His 12 goals was tied for second-most on the squad alongside 10 assists. Eight of his goals came on the power play, which led the team and was the most for a Cornellian since the 2009-10 season. For a second straight year, Yates scored at Madison Square Garden in New York — this time opening the scoring against New Hampshire on Nov. 26 at The Frozen Apple. On Jan. 20 against Clarkson, Yates set a career-high with three points in a game on two goals and an assist in a 3-3 tie. As the team got hot down the stretch, Yates was in the middle of it with nine points over a 10-game stretch in which the Big Red lost just one game from Feb. 3 to March 10.
Sophomore Season — 2015-16
Yates scored six goals to go with seven assists for 13 points in 32 games, appearing at both center and on the wing. He had four points in the team's first five games of the year, then had a three-game point streak from Nov. 21 to Dec. 4 — starting with the lone goal of the Big Red's 1-0 victory at Brown. He then scored on the big stage to give the Big Red a two-goal lead Nov. 28 against Boston University at Madison Square Garden during the Red Hot Hockey game. Yates' final goal of the season may have also been the biggest, when he kicked a pass from his skate to his stick and vaulted a shot high into the net for the winner in Game 2 of an ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series at Quinnipiac on March 12.
Freshman Season — 2014-15
Yates saw success in his first season with the Big Red, as he was one of four Cornell skaters to finish the season with a plus rating. He made an impact immediately by scoring in his first career game, when he struck late in the second period on Nov. 1 against Omaha. His first assist came in a Jan. 10 win at Clarkson, when his shot created a rebound that was cashed in by Matt Buckles. He then had his first career multi-point game Jan. 16, when he had a pair of assists in the Big Red's 5-1 victory over defending national champion Union.
Prior to Cornell
Yates had 104 career points over three seasons at Deerfield Academy in western Massachusetts. He had 25 goals and 23 assists for 48 points while serving as an assistant captain as a senior, one season after leading the squad in scoring with 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points. He also won a Tier I Under 18 national championship with the Neponset Valley River Rats at the AAA level, scoring the title-clinching goal in overtime against the St. Louis AAA Blues.
