Biography
A starter for the Big Red since arriving on East Hill, Fitzsimmons suffered an injury mid-season that sidelined her for seven games. A player that competes with a great deal of passion and desire to win, she has also proven to be a legitimate scoring threat as one of the team’s top 3-point shooters and will look to win back her starting role in her final season.
At Cornell
Fitzsimmons started the first 12 games of the season before being sidelined with an injury. She returned to the line up vs. Harvard on Feb. 15 and finished the season having seen action in 22 games. She ranked fourth on the team in points per game (8.0) and scored in double-digits eight times, leading the Big Red on four occasions. An outstanding 3-point shooter, Fitzsimmons ranked third on the team and eighth in the Ivy League in 3-point field goal percentage (.370) and sixth in the conference in 3-pointers made per game (1.55). She also moved into a tie for third place overall in Cornell history for career 3-pointers made (111). Fitzsimmons started the year strong, tallying a team-high 15 points at No. 19 West Virginia in front of her hometown crowd. She followed that with being named to the Cornell Classic All-Tournament team after scoring a season-high 19 points vs. Gardner-Webb and 11 points vs. Bowling Green. With her 13 points vs. Penn on March 7, Fitzsimmons surpassed the 600-point plateau for her career. She finished the year strong with seven points, three rebounds and two assists vs. No. 1 Connecticut during the first round of the NCAA tournament. Fitzsimmons started 26 games during her sophomore season and ranked first on the team in minutes played per game (26.3). She scored in double-figures nine times during the season and led the team in scoring on six occasions. She ranked third on the team with 8.2 points per game and was second on the team with 2.5 assists per game. Fitzsimmons garnered Ivy League All-Rookie honors after a freshman campaign in which she started 23 games for the Big Red. A proficient point guard who was immediately thrust into a starting role, Fitzsimmons finished the season ranked first on the team and seventh in the league with 3.2 assists per game. Fitzsimmons also proved to be a scoring threat, especially from beyond the arc, where she connected on 41.2 percent of her attempts, good for fifth in the conference. She led the team in scoring on four occasions and earned two Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors during the season. Fitzsimmons also set a career-high with 23 points when she connected on 7-for-10 from 3-point range vs. Harvard, finishing the evening tied with Suzy Onze (1991-94) for the second-best single-game performance from beyond the arc in Big Red history, falling just two treys short of tying the school record.
At Wheeling Central Catholic
Fitzsimmons is the all-time leading scorer, boys or girls, at Wheeling Central Catholic HS. She scored 1,831 points and averaged 21.7 points, 4.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.6 steals per game as a senior. A first-team all-state, all-valley and all-league selection, Fitzsimmons was a four-year starter for Wheeling, leading her team to the state championship game in 2003, 2004 and 2005, while helping bring home the school’s first Division A title in 2004.
Personal
Kayleen Jo Fitzsimmons is the daughter of Robert and Sunni Fitzsimmons and is enrolled in the College of Hotel Administration. She has two older brothers, Rocky and Clayton ‘04. Clayton was a four-year member of the Cornell football team.
