Biography

At Cornell
In his first season at his natural position at second base, Heinz posted his best numbers both at the plate and in the field. He hit .285 from the plate with a team-high four home runs - after entering the season without a triple or home run - and was second with 28 runs scored and 22 driven in. With the glove, Heinz posted a .958 fielding percentage, easily his best campaign to date, as he was named one of the team's two Most Improved Players. Heinz started all 38 games of the season at second base after playing mostly third base and shortstop in his first two seasons. He opened the 2007 season with at least one hit in the first five games, and later had a streak of 10 games with a hit. He had two three-hit contests, tallying a trio against Villanova (March 11) and Dartmouth (April 7). The game against the Big Green was his best offensive game of the year, when he went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four driven in, while hitting his third home run of the season. Heinz appeared in 31 games as a sophomore, making 22 starts at third base. He posted a .225 average and had 14 runs scored and five batted in. Heinz also drew nine walks during the season, tied for fourth-highest on the team, and stole six bases in nine attempts, the third-highest stolen base total. Heinz posted a .875 fielding percentage at third base, tallying nine errors in 63 total chances. He had six multi-hit games during the season. During his freshman year, he batted .211 in 24 games, collecting eight runs scored and five driven in while also stealing five bases.

At New Trier
Heinz was a two-sport athlete, playing both baseball and basketball at New Trier HS. He earned two letters in each sport and served as captain of both teams. He was named all-conference and all-area in baseball.
