Biography
Junior Season - 2010
Pappel earned honorable mention all-Ivy League for his play as a junior when he led the Big Red in innings pitched (51.0) and strikeouts (52) and was third on the roster in earned-run average (3.71). He appeared in name games, all starts, and finished the season with a 2-2 record. Pappel's best outing came in a complete-game shutout of eventual league champion Dartmouth on April 3, working seven innings of three-hit ball, striking out four. He struck out a season-high nine on March 21 against Northwestern and again on March 27 at Army. Pappel made his season debut on March 16 against Binghamton, working five innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts. Pappel surrendered just 11 extra-base hits on the season, including 10 doubles and one home run.
Sophomore Season - 2009
Pappel started the year off slowly but rounded into form as the season progressed, turning into the staff's best pitcher for the second half of the year. His turnaround began with six innings of scoreless relief against Penn on April 11, striking out seven, walking one and allowing just three hits. Inserted back into the starting rotation a week later at Columbia, Pappel worked six innings, striking out six and allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. He followed that up with an eight-inning showing on April 24 at Princeton, fanning nine and allowing one run on three hits and a walk for his first victory of the year. Pappel then got the starting nod in the Gehrig Division playoff game against the Tigers and posted his best outing of the year, striking out 11 in six two-hit innings as he helped the Big Red tie the single-game strikeout mark of 18. He then started game three of the Ivy League Championship Series, taking the loss after working five innings and allowing eight runs - only five of them earned - while striking out six. For the year, Pappel finished with a 5.36 earned run average in 40.1 innings of work, striking out a team-best 43 batters and posting a 2-3 record. Following the season, Pappel played summer league ball with the Elmira Pioneers of the New York Collegiate Baseball League, earning accolades from Baseball America as the sixth-highest rated prospect and third-best pitcher in that league.
Freshman Season - 2008
Pappel burst onto the scene with a win in his collegiate debut, opening the season with six scoreless innings against Siena on Feb. 29, scattering four hits and striking out six in the Big Red’s 1-0 victory. He pitched another six strong innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit and a walk while striking out another half dozen batters on March 7 against La Salle in taking the hard-luck loss. His third outing was much of the same, as he worked 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing an unearned run on four walks and five hits while fanning three in a 4-1 win over Penn State on March 16. Pappel struck out a career-best seven in 5.2 innings against Dartmouth on March 30. He finished the season tied with Matt Hill for the most strikeouts (36) and was one of only two pitchers to throw more than 35 innings on the season.
