Biography

Junior Season — 2016
Smith made five appearances in the outfield and hit a home run in a March 12 game at Wofford. He then transitioned to the mound for the rest of the season and pitched 7.1 innings across seven appearances. His longest outing was his first, when he fanned four across 3.1 quiet innings against Bucknell on March 19.

Sophomore Season — 2015
Smith appeared in 18 games during his second year, including ten starts in left field and one behind the plate. He crushed a pinch-hit two-run home run on March 1 at Virginia for his first runs driven in on the season. He had his only multi-hit game on March 14 against Bowling Green when he went 2-for-5 with a double and a RBI.

Freshman Season — 2014
Smith hit .176 from the bottom third of the order over 16 appearances, including nine starts at catcher — second-most on the team. He was 2-for-5 with one of his two doubles March 16 at James Madison, then had another two-hit game in his first Ivy League start April 13 at Penn. Smith's first collegiate RBI came April 20 in the fourth game of the series against Columbia.

Prior to Cornell
Smith was selected as the metro New Orleans small-school player of the year after winning all three of his school’s postseason awards – Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and MVP. He was a Louisiana 2A All-State First Team selection after batting .478 with six home runs, seven doubles, eight triples, 10 stolen bases and 46 RBIs in addition to a 5-2 record and 1.52 earned-run average with 79 strikeouts in just 46 innings on the mound. He earned Perfect Game USA Preseason Underclass All-American High Honorable Mention in 2012, then was named a Perfect Game USA Top 1,000 national recruit and Rawlings Preseason All-Southeast Region Honorable Mention the following season.

James Edward Smith III is the son of James and Sarah Smith, and he has an older sister. He is enrolled in the College of Engineering.
