Senior Season — 2015
A year after playing primarily at second base, Tatum shuffled over to third base to make 35 of his 40 starts. He had his best season offensively, hitting at a .302 clip. He also led the squad in a multitude of categories, including hits (42), RBI (26), on-base percentage (.377) and multi-RBI games (8). He also shared a team lead with 13 multi-hit games, including a 3-for-5 showing on April 12 against Penn. He also popped his third career long ball on April 4 at Harvard. He was at his best during Ivy League play by hitting for .310 with 12 of his 17 runs scored coming against Ancient Eight opponents and his 10-game hitting streak in March was the longest by any Big Red player all season.
Junior Season — 2014
After primarily serving as a designated hitter for his first two seasons, Tatum settled in as the Big Red's starting second baseman and hit .237 across 35 starts and one appearance off the bench. His nine doubles tied a career high, and he struck out just 14 times in 114 official at-bats. Tatum had one of the Big Red's six four-hit games, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs on March 15 at James Madison. It kicked off a span of 11 hits over six games for Tatum, who later clubbed his first collegiate triple in the season finale April 27 at Princeton.
Sophomore Season — 2013
Tatum ranked fourth on the team with 38 starts, batting .254 while serving as the primary left fielder and garnering All-Ivy League Honorable Mention for a second consecutive season. He was the only member of the Big Red with five RBIs in a game, using a pair of home runs to accomplish the feat on March 19 at Davidson. He ranked second on the team in doubles (nine), total bases (46), and was third in on base percentage (.369). He was the only member of the team to walk as many times as he struck out, tying for the team lead in walks with 23. Tatum was particularly strong in Ivy League play, wherer he batted .322 over 19 games. He was named the College Sports Madness Ivy League Player of the Week on April 23 after he smacked eight hits the previous weekend in four games against Penn.
Freshman Season — 2012
Tatum was one of the Big Red’s most consistent hitters throughout the season, earning All-Ivy League Honorable Mention. He was the only batter to hit .300 or better for the entire campaign, getting off to a torrid start with 24 hits in 20 games during March. His prowess at the plate continued into Ivy League play, where he boasted a team-best .311 average in Ancient Eight games while earning starts at third base, left field and — most often — designated hitter. ... Tatum went 3 for 5 with three runs in his collegiate debut on March 2 at Maryland-Eastern Shore. He had another three-hit game the following weekend at George Washington. ... Tatum scored two of the Big Red’s three runs over the first nine innings of a must-win April 29 game at Princeton, having led off the fifth and seventh innings with singles. ... His .404 on base percetnage ranks third among regular players, and his 22 walks are second on the team.
Prior to Cornell
Tatum was named the Cardinal District Player of the Year as a senior at Woodbridge H.S. in Virginia. He earned All-State AAA second-team honors and was selected to the Virginia High School Coaches Association State All-Sar Team after serving as captain of the squad and garnering MVP honors in 2011. Tatum has also collected a variety of academic awards. He was a Summa Cum Laude Scholar, Virginia Governor's Scholar, Presidential Scholar and three-year member of the National Honor Society. He won the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Northern Virginia Black Scholar Award in 2011, as well as being named a Northern Virginia Urban League Scholar — an honor bestowed on only 14 of the top-achieving African-American students in the area.
Personal
Kevin Eric Tatum is the son of Eric and Lisa Tatum, and he has an older brother. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
