Prior to Cornell
Bowers transferred to Cornell after one year at the Marion Military Institute in Alabama, where he was named to the President's List and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Before that, he earned four letters with the Umatilla HS baseball team as a catcher and secondary pitcher. His teammates voted him a co-captain for both his junior and seniors seasons, and his coach awarded him Gold Glove honors as a junior and Team MVP honors as a senior. He was the valedictorian of his class at Umatilla HS. He also competed with the Orlando Scorpions of The Perfect Game organization, ranking as high as seventh nationally.

Personal
Mathew Reid Bowers is the son of Tom and Jenipher Bowers, and he has two brothers and a a sister. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
