Biography

Senior Season — 2017
Horton was the Big Red's primary lefty out of the bullpen, tying for second-most on the team with 13 appearances. He posted a 2-1 record and 4.85 ERA, but that doesn't come close to telling the story of his effectiveness. None of Horton's nine inherited runners came around to score, and he didn't yield any runs in 11 of his 13 outings. Opposing batters hit just .182 against him with runners on base, and left-handed hitters went just 2-for-18 against Horton.

Junior Season — 2015
Horton made three appearances for the Big Red out of the bullpen during the early stages of the season.

Sophomore Season — 2014
Horton continued to be one of the Big Red's preferred bullpen options, tying for second on the team with 12 appearances from the mound. He also continued to show a propensity for escaping jams. After stranding all 10 runners he inherited during his freshman season, Horton allowed just three of his 12 inherited runners to score as a sophomore. Some early-season command struggles elevated his earned-run average to 4.00 at season's end, but Horton's ERA in Ivy League play was a respectable 3.00 across six appearances. He had nine strikeouts versus just one walk in nine innings during league games, including his fourth career save April 1 against Harvard.

Freshman Season — 2013
Horton had a very successful collegiate debut, completing 10.1 innings in 10 appearances. He had a 1-0 record, with that victory coming March 19 at Davidson. His three saves tied for the team lead with sophomore Eric Upton, with his first save coming in his first collegiate appearance on March 17 at Appalachian State. He became the Big Red's go-to man out of the bullpen with runners on base, as he stranded all 10 runners he inherited on the season. He surrendered just two runs (both unearned) in his five appearances in Ivy League play.

Prior to Cornell
Horton was the ace of the Arlington HS pitching staff for three seasons, helping the team win the Section 1 Class AA Championship in 2012. He was named to the all-tournament team that season, also capturing all-league, all-county and all-section honors. Horton earned Rawlings Preseason All-Region Team Honorable Mention and was a member of the Dutchess County All-Academic Team in 2012. He also garnered Rawlings Preseason Underclass All-American Honorable Mention in 2011 and was a member of the National Honor Society.

Personal
Matthew David Horton is the son David and Virginia Horton, and he has an older sister. His father played baseball for Virginia and went on to play professionally in the St. Louis Cardinals' minor-league system. His uncle, Rick Horton, enjoyed a seven-year career in Major League Baseball with St. Louis, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. He is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
