Prior to Cornell
Hintz spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at a pair of Division III schools, spending 2016 coaching outside linebackers at Maine Maritime Academy after serving on the staff at St. Norbert College as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator in 2015.

At Maine Maritime, Hintz helped install a 3-4 defense while playing a variety of roles behind the scenes. He assisted in practice planning and gameplans, as well as holding responsibility for academic and regimental responsibilities for the student-athletes. He recruited throughout the Northeast.

At St. Norbert, Hintz was part of a team that went 10-0 during the regular season, winning a Midwest Conference championship and qualifying for the NCAA Division III playoffs. The defense allowed just 13.4 points per game and dropped its lone contest to national semifinalist Wisconsin-Whitewater. One of his players, RJ Callow, earned all-conference accolades. He was involved in nearly every aspect of the program.

He previously coached both the offensive and defensive lines at La Crosse Logan HS, helping the team to a conference title and two appearances in the state quarterfinals. Included was a state semifinal appearance in 2013. He was also a line coach for three seasons at his alma mater, Oconto HS, to begin his career on the sidelines.

A two-year captain at Oconto HS, he was an honorable mention all-league selection as a senior. Hintz was part of two state playoff qualifiers.
