McCarty spent the 1991 campaign as an intern for the New England Patriots.
A 1977 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, where he was an all-conference linebacker on the gridiron, McCarty earned a degree in education. He went on to get a master's in physical education from Syracuse in 1982.
