Rodriguez was a  first-team all-league and second-team all-district kicker as a senior at North Olmsted HS. An Academic All-Ohio pick, he was chosen to participate in the Cuyahoga County East-West All-Star Game in 2009. A three-year letter winner in football, he also competed in soccer and track and field for four seasons. In soccer, he was a two-time all-conference selection and led his team to a conference and district crown as a senior captain. Rodriguez also served as captain of his track team, guiding it to a conference title as a junior and earned all-league honors in each of his last two years.

Personal
John Patrick Rodriguez is the son of Mark and Jackie Rodriguez and has two brothers and a sister. His father played football at Baldwin-Wallace. He is enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
