At Cornell: One of the team’s top defenders and pass rushers, McCarthy is again expected to start at one defensive end position. McCarthy is a versatile lineman who can rush the passer, stuff the run or even drop back and cover a tight end or someone out of the backfield. A converted linebacker, McCarthy possesses the speed to get to the outside and the size and strength to play a role in the run game. He registered 48 tackles as a junior. Included among his highlights were five tackles for a loss and a sack. He also added a pass breakup and a forced fumble to the cause. McCarthy had a career-best 10 tackles in the win over Georgetown, adding a forced fumble and a sack. He also notched seven tackles against Bucknell and Penn and had at least six tackles in half of his 10 starts. McCarthy had 10 tackles and two sacks while seeing action in all 10 contests as a sophomore in 2006. He made his first career start in a win over Dartmouth, and had a career-best three tackles against both Brown and Princeton. McCarthy competed on the junior varsity as a freshman. He is enrolled in the College of Engineering.

At Hood River Valley: McCarthy was an honorable mention all-state selection and the 2004 Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a linebacker at Hood River Valley HS. A first-team all-conference pick at linebacker and second-team all-league selection at running back, McCarthy was a three-year letter winner in football and also lettered twice in lacrosse and once on the ski team. He was a member of his high school’s honor roll and was inducted into his school’s chapter of the National Honor Society.

Personal: Lucas McCarthy is the son of Michael and Susan McCarthy and has an older brother and sister.
