At Cornell
McDonough played in four of the team's final five games as a sophomore in 2012, He made a pair of tackles, both against Dartmouth, two weeks after making his varsity debut at Brown. McDonough did not see varsity action as a freshman in 2011.

At Darien HS
McDonough earned first-team all-league honors as a senior while helping Darien HS to a league crown and a trip to the state semifinals. He served as a team captain and was awarded the scholar-athlete team trophy. As a junior, McDonough earned all-league and all-county honors. He also served as captain of both the indoor and outdoor track teams, specializing in the 100 and 200 meters. McDonough earned all-state and all-county  honors  in the 4x200 relay and was a member of the county championship relay team. 

Personal
Peter Bull McDonough is the son of  Andrea and Peter McDonough and has an older sister, Caroline, who is  a member of Columbia's cross country and track and field team. McDonough is enrolled in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
