At Cornell
Max Ginsberg '18 returned to Cornell as assistant basketball coach in July 2021 after three seasons on the staff at Holy Cross.
Despite being picked seventh in the preseason Ivy League media poll, the Big Red earned the program's second conference tournament bid and posted a 15-11 final record in Ginsberg's first season back on the sidelines. Four different players earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors and senior guard Dean Noll earned second team All-Ivy honors. Cornell ranked No. 1 in the country in adjusted pace in terms of shortest average possession time in Division I during the non-conference season and finished the campaign seventh nationally in assists per game (17.3), 17th in scoring offense (79.2 ppg.) and led the Ancient Eight in defensive rebounds (27.96) and steals (7.9) per game.
The 2022-23 team made its second straight conference tournament appearance and posted 17 wins - the most by a Big Red team in 13 years - despite having to replace four starters. Cornell opened the season 14-4 with a two-point loss at eventual ACC champion and Final Four participant Miami (Fla.). The Big Red led the Ivy League in 11 categories, including scoring offense (81.7), 3-pointers made (10.7) and attempted (30.4) per game, assists (17.5), assist:turnover ratio (1.41), steals (9.7), effective field goal percentage (.556) and fastbreak points (15.9). Greg Dolan earned second-team All-Ivy and NABC All-Region honors, while Nazir Williams was an honorable mention pick.
The Big Red went 22-8 (the second-most wins in a season in school history) in 2023-24, finishing second in the final Ivy League standings and earning the program's first-ever bid to the NIT. Cornell posted a school record for assists in a season (544) and highest assist:turnover ratio (1.486) and ranked in the top three in school history in 3-pointers made (second, 310), steals (second, 250) and scoring average (third, 82.1). The Big Red was road tough, as its 10 true road victories ranked fourth nationally in large part due to its balance - six players averaged at least 8.8 points with nine playing 15.0 minutes per contest or more.
Ginsberg spent four years with the Big Red men’s basketball program as an undergraduate, working with head coaches Bill Courtney and Brian Earl. He served as the assistant to the director of basketball operations during the 2017-18 season, where he assisted with practice plans, scouting reports, film editing and travel arrangements. Ginsberg also spent three years as the team’s head student manager. In addition, he was the director of the Cornell summer basketball camp in 2017, while working as a coach at summer camps for Holy Cross and UCLA.
Prior to Cornell
Ginsberg spent the previous two seasons as director of basketball operations under Coach Brett Nelson after one year as the team's video coordinator under Coach Bill Carmody. His primary responsibilities included coordinating recruiting efforts, summer camps and day-to-day office duties, in addition to serving as the team’s travel and video coordinator.
In 2020-21, Ginsberg helped the Crusaders more than double their Patriot League win total from the previous season. Holy Cross placed two players on the All-Patriot League teams and another on the Patriot League All-Rookie team.
