Biography
In 2013-14 (junior)
Cherry had a breakout season as a junior captain, averaging 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 42 percent from the floor in 28 starts. He ranked fifth in the Ancient Eight in assists and in the top 20 in both scoring and rebounding, one of just four players in the conference to meet all three of those thresholds. Cherry was one of just two players in the Ivy League to average at least 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in Ivy League play (14.0, 4.8 rpg., 3.5 apg.), joining first-team all-league pick T.J. Bray of Princeton. He had a career-high 29 points against Yale at home and then notched 17 points, a career-high 10 assists and seven rebounds vs. Brown. Cherry scored 22 points with three rebounds and three assists at Dartmouth and notched 21 points and seven rebounds at Saint Peter’s. Cherry posted his first career double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and four assists at Brown. He ended the year with 20 double figure scoring games.
In 2012-13 (sophomore)
Cherry ranked among the team’s scoring leaders off the bench (6.2 ppg.) to go along with 2.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists in just 15.9 minutes per game. He posted a career-high 16 points in the loss at Boston University and scored 14 points against Old Westbury, St. Bonaventure and Saint Peter's. He made his first collegiate start against Old Westbury, adding five assists to his 14 points. Cherry also dded seven rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes against Saint Peter’s. Cherry exploded for 13 points off the bench against No. 22 Wisconsin and 13 more in the win over Presbyterian. He missed the team's final four games due to injury.
In 2011-12 (freshman)
Cherry played in 21 contests off the bench, averaging 1.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. He played in each of the team's final 20 contests and averaged 8.3 minutes per contest. Cherry exploded for career highs of 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal in 28 minutes against Maryland. Included was a 3-of-7 effort from 3-point range. He had four points and career highs of five assists and four rebounds against Albright and scored first career points with a buzzer-beating 20-foot turnaround jumper at the end of the first half at Stony Brook.
At Meridien HS
Cherry was part of a state championship team as a senior at Meridian HS and was named the state’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Cherry had 15 points in the state championship game. Cherry averaged 11.6 points per game as a junior behind national top 25 recruit Rodney Hood (Mississippi State) en route to honorable mention all-state honors by the Clarion Ledger. He was a two-star prospect by scouting service Scout.com and was rated the No. 32 overall prospect by Hoop Scoop online prior to his senior year. His team was ranked among the top 30 nationally throughout his senior season by numerous high school basketball rankings.
