McDonagh has completed one season as a volunteer assistant coach with the men's hockey team, helping the Big Red post a 21-9-5 record, return to the ECAC Hockey championship for the first time since 2011 and earn an at-large bid to the NCAA championships.

McDonagh was the lone senior on Penn State when the team debuted in the Big Ten Conference in the 2013-14 season. After competing with the Nittany Lions' club team for two years, McDonagh was invited to join the varsity team for its debut season in 2012-13. McDonagh earned a bachelor's degree in finance with a focus on entrepreneurship in 2014, then worked in marketing in New York City for two years prior to his arrival on East Hill.
