Biography
As a sophomore (2019-20)
• Racked up three goals and four assists for seven points and plus-10 rating in just 10 games.
• Emerged as a constant in the lineup down the stretch, playing in eight of the team's final nine games.
• Led team with plus-9 rating in February — a month in which the Big Red a perfect 9-0.
• Had a goal and an assist in his first two shifts of the season, coming in just 5:12 of the first period of a 6-2 win Nov. 9 against Yale.
As a freshman (2018-19)
• Worked his way into 30 games, gradually seeing increased role as season progressed.
• Scored once and added four assists for five points with a plus-3 rating.
• Recorded first two collegiate points with assists in Nov. 30 game at Dartmouth.
• Scored first collegiate goal in team's 6-0 win over Brown in the ECAC Hockey Championship semifinals in Lake Placid.
Prior to Cornell
• Finished the 2017-18 season with the British Columbia Hockey League's Salmon Arm Silverbacks after being traded from the Penticton Vees. Accumulated a combined 21 points over 40 games.
• Helped Penticton win the BCHL title in 2016-17, going on to compete in the RBC Cup.
• Played majority of previous two seasons with Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League's Stratford Cullitons, garnering the league's Best Defensive Award and a spot on the first all-star team after helping the team to a 2015-16 league championship.
• Broke into junior hockey in 2013-14 with the Halton Ravens of the Greater Metro Jr. A Hockey League.
• Also competed in tennis in high school, winning a junior county championship.
Personal
• Joseph Francis Leahy is the son of Frank Leahy and Lisa Bauer-Leahy, and he has four sisters and two brothers.
• Mother competed for Canadian national field hockey at the 1984 Olympics.
• Great uncle, Bobby Bauer, was an NHL veteran with the Boston Bruins and is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
• Great uncle, David Bauer, is also a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, as well as the IIHF Hall of Fame. He established the first permanent Canadian national hockey team for the 1964 Olympics and later served as coach and general manager.
• Eldest sister, Maria, played field hockey at Waterloo, and another older sister, Brianna, competed on the hockey team at Princeton.
• Eldest brother, Philip, played golf at Berry, and younger brother, Basil, plays tennis at Western Ontario.
