At Cornell

Varn joined the Big Red men’s lacrosse staff in the fall of 2020, helping the team navigate the changes and challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about. His duties at Cornell include coaching the goalie unit and assisting with the offense.

Prior to Cornell

Varn most recently held the role of volunteer assistant coach at nearby Ithaca College throughout the winter and spring of 2020, having previously served as an assistant coach of the women’s lacrosse team at his alma mater, Hofstra University, from August 2016 – January 2020. As Hofstra’s offensive coordinator and goalie coach, Varn helped the Pride to a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title game appearance in 2019.

Varn helped developed Hofstra’s Alyssa Parrella into one of the most potent offensive players in CAA history. She was named the 2019 CAA Player of the Year, in addition to earning All-America accolades, after finishing the season ranked among the top-five nationally for points and goals. Under Varn’s guidance, Parrella was also tabbed the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2017. In total, Varn helped nine student-athletes to All-CAA honors, including goalie Jess Smith, who ranked fifth in the nation in goalie save percentage in 2019.

Prior to his time at Hofstra, Varn served as a volunteer assistant coach at Mount St. Mary’s during the 2016 season. He excelled in his role of offensive coordinator, guiding four players to All-Northeastern Conference (NEC) honors, including first-team selection Bubba Johnson, the Mount’s first since 2013.

Varn got his coaching start as a graduate assistant coach for Division III Stevenson from July 2014 – January 2016. He helped the Mustangs to the 2015 MAC Commonwealth Championship and an NCAA Quarterfinal appearance.

Playing Career

Varn played collegiate lacrosse at Hofstra, serving as the team’s captain as a senior in 2014. He closed out his playing days with the Pride on a high note, being named Second-Team All-CAA and earning a spot on the CAA All-Tournament team in his senior campaign. He also was selected to compete in the USILA’s North/South Senior Game.

Varn graduated from Hofstra in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in history.
