Biography

Career:
After playing sparingly in his first two years, Mitchell became one of the most dominant offensive players in the nation during his junior and senior seasons. He became the 32nd player in Cornell history to reach the 100-point plateau, a feat that’s even more impressive considering that he entered the 2006 campaign with just four career points. A two-time All-American and two-time first-team All-Ivy pick, Mitchell was also a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee as a senior. During his career, Mitchell matched or outscored the opponent’s offensive performance five times. During the 2007 season, Mitchell scored five goals against both Dartmouth and Penn as the Big Red defeated the Big Green, 17-3 and the Quakers, 20-5. During the 2006 campaign, Mitchell registered eight goals against Binghamton (W, 16-3), three goals against Army (W, 13-1) and three goals vs. Lehigh (W, 12-3). Following graduation he was the eighth overall pick in the first round of the Major League Lacrosse draft, taken by the Boston Cannons, and the 25th overall pick (second round) by the National Lacrosse League’s Philadelphia Wings.

At Cornell:
Mitchell earned second-team All-America honors and was a first-team All-Ivy pick following his senior season. He started all 16 games for the Big Red and led the team in goals (47), ranked second overall in points (56), and third overall in ground balls (53). His 53 ground balls were the most ground balls picked up by a Cornell attackman since Anthony Pavone and Chris Danler registered 64 and 62 ground balls, respectively, in 1995. He scored at least one goal in all but one game and registered mutli-point games 13 times during the 2007 season. He finished the year ranked fourth  in the nation in goals per game (2.94 gpg.) and 16th overall in points per game (3.50).  With his five goals vs. Towson in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA tournament, Mitchell moved into fifth place in Cornell history for goals in a single NCAA tournament game. He was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on April 16 after registering four goals, one assist and seven ground balls vs. No. 18 Syracuse, before tallying five goals, one assist and five ground balls vs. Dartmouth. In his first season as a starter, Mitchell was named an honorable mention All-American and a first-team All-Ivy selection following a breakout junior campaign in which he was the Big Red's main offensive weapon. He started all 14 games on the year and gave Cornell its first 40-goal performance in a single-season since Sean Steinwald scored 44 goals during the 2000 campaign. He finished the year with the longest point-scoring streak on the team, registering at least one point in all 14 contests during the 2006 season. Mitchell was named the Ivy League co-Player of the Week on May 8 after leading the Big Red to a 15-6 victory over Hobart in which he scored four goals, had two assists and picked up two ground balls. As a sophomore, Mitchell saw action in 11 games, tallying three goals, including the game-winner vs. Notre Dame, and one assist for four points on the year.

At Central Collegiate:
Mitchell was the leading scorer for the Canadian field lacrosse national team in 2001 and also earned the student-athlete award for the Moose Jaw Warriors. He is also an experienced ice hockey player, having played for 12 years.

Personal:
David C. Mitchell is the son of Gerry and Lauren Mitchell and is enrolled in Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences. He has two older sisters and an older brother.
