Biography
Career:
McMonagle finished his career as the 19th three-time All-American in Cornell men’s lacrosse history. A first-team All-America pick as a senior, he was a second-team selection as a junior and earned an honorable mention nod as a sophomore. A three-time first-team All-Ivy pick (the seventh in school history), he finished his career as the winningest goalie in Cornell history and was also the winningest active goalie in Division I in 2007 with 45 career victories. Over four seasons, he posted 45-10 (.818) overall record and a 21-1 (.955) record in the Ivy League. He was the unanimous Ivy League Player of the Year and also earned the Ens. C.M. Kelly Jr. Award as the nation's most outstanding goalkeeper in 2007. A two-time Tewaaraton Trophy nominee, McMonagle finished his career with 558 saves, good for fifth overall in Cornell history and was also the school record holder for single-season goals against average (5.73 in 2006, third in NCAA history) and stood atop the school's career goals against average list (7.27, third in NCAA history). He also ranked second in Cornell history and fourth in NCAA history in minutes played, logging 3,160 between the pipes. During his career, McMonagle was named Ivy League Player of the Week on three occasions - April 10, 2006, April 23, 2007 and March 12, 2007. Following graduation, he was selected by the Long Island Lizards in the first round of the Major League Lacrosse draft, taken with the 10th overall pick.
At Cornell:
McMonagle won the USILA’s Ens. C.M. Kelly Jr. Award as the nations most outstanding goalkeeper and finished the 2007 season ranked third in the nation in save percentage (.616) and fifth overall in goals against average (7.03, the fourth best mark in school history). The unanimous Ivy League Player of the Year, McMonagle was named first-team All-American, first-team All-Ivy, a Tewaaraton Trophy nominee and earned Cornell’s Charles H. Moore Outstanding Senior Varsity Athlete Award. He was named the Ivy League Player of the Week twice during the season. He recorded double digit saves in nine contests, including a career-high 19 stops vs. nationally ranked Princeton and then again vs. Towson in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA tournament. He started all 16 games, playing all but seven minutes during the season, and posted a 15-1 record. McMonagle earned the distinction of being the first-ever recipient of the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for men's lacrosse. The award, selected by a nationwide vote of coaches, media and fans, is awarded to college lacrosse's outstanding NCAA Division I senior student athlete. An outstanding student-athlete, McMonagle was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large First Team. As a junior, McMonagle was named a second-team All-American. He was also a first-team All-Ivy selection and a Tewaarton Trophy nominee. He finished the campaign ranked second in the nation with a 5.73 goals against average (the top mark in Cornell history) and third in the country with a .625 save percentage. McMonagle started all 14 games, posting an 11-3 record, as well as a 5-1 mark in the Ivy League. He made 130 saves during the season, posting double-digit saves in eight contests. He was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on April 10 following the game with Harvard in which he made a season-high 14 saves while allowing a mere three goals, one of which came on an empty net following a failed clear. McMonagle was an honorable mention All-America selection following his sophomore season after leading the Big Red to an 11-3 record and a perfect 6-0 mark in Ivy League play. McMonagle started all 14 games and saw 811 minutes of action. He recorded a .548 save percentage while making 132 saves and posting an 8.07 GAA. McMonagle recorded double-digits saves in five contests, including a season-high 17 saves vs. Penn. As a freshman, McMonagle came up with critical performances during the Big Red's stretch run. He played in 11 games as a rookie, making nine starts, and had four performances of 14 saves or more, including both NCAA contests. He posted eight wins and had a save percentage of .580 to go along with a goals against average of 8.75.
At Episcopal:
McMonagle was a three-year starting goaltender for both the lacrosse and water polo teams at Episcopal Academy. He was the captain of the lacrosse team and earned all-state honors in 2002. His water polo team captured the prep championship his junior season.
Personal:
Matthew Brian McMonagle is the son of Joseph McMonagle and Judith Wren. He is enrolled in Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences.
