2017-18 Men's Ice Hockey Roster
Biography
Junior Season — 2017-18
Angello tied for the team lead in goals (13) and overall scoring (26) while posting a plus-17 rating before signing an entry-level contract with the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins after the season. He earned spots on the All-Ivy League Second Team and All-ECAC Hockey Second Team. Angello got off to a hot start with seven points over the first seven games before a particularly torrid stretch after the semester break. He led the nation with nine goals in January, resulting in ECAC Hockey Player of the Month honors. Included in the outburst was a memorable performance Jan. 26 at Harvard, when he accounted for all of the offense in a 3-0 victory over the Big Red's biggest rival. After the season, Angello was presented the team's Crimson Cup Award, given annually to the player whose contribution to the team was outstanding during the season series against Harvard. Despite playing on the wing, Angello was also the team's leading faceoff man with a 58.5 percent success rate.
Sophomore Season — 2016-17
Angello ranked second on the team with 12 goals to go with eight assists, leaving him fifth in overall scoring with 20 points. Seven of his goals came in the team's final 14 games of the season, including the game-winners in both Game 2 and Game 3 of an ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series against Clarkson from March 10-12 at Lynah Rink. He had six games in which he had multiple points, including a pair of two-goal games against Union on Feb. 3 and Brown the following weekend on Feb. 12. Angello was then the only member of the team to have a point in each of the team's first four playoff games. In all, he was tied for the team's postseason scoring lead with two goals and two assists for four points over six playoff games.
Freshman Season — 2015-16
Angello made a very successful debut with the Big Red, leading the team with 11 goals and finishing second in overall scoring with 24 points. He played the entire season on the team's 'JAM' line with Jeff Kubiak at center and Mitch Vanderlaan on the opposite wing. Angello became Cornell's first freshman to lead the teams in goals since Colin Greening during the 2006-07 campaign. He also became the program's first player to tally point in his first four games since Ryan Moynihan did so Nov. 8-16, 1996. In his sixth game of the season, Angello scored the winning goal in overtime Nov. 14 at Colgate. Two weeks later, he kicked off the scoring in Red Hot Hockey against Boston University at Madison Square Garden by tipping in a power-play goal in the first period. ECAC Hockey twice named Angello its Rookie of the Week. The first honor was Jan. 12, after he poured in a pair of goals and added an assist in a 5-1 victory over Merrimack three days earlier. He was also tabbed the circuit's top rookie on March 1 after an identical two-goal, one-assist effort on Senior Night against Rensselaer. Angello then recorded a point in three of the Big Red's five playoff games and was presented the Cornell Hockey Association's Greg Ratushny Award at the team's postseason banquet, which is given annually to the team's most promising rookie.
Prior to Cornell
Angello was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins with the 145th pick in the fifth round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. He returned to the USHL’s Omaha Lancers the following season and racked up 19 goals and 16 assists for 35 points in 56 games. He also had two goals and three assists while helping Team USA win the gold medal at the 2014 Junior A World Challenge. Before joining the Lancers, he played for two seasons with the Empire Junior Hockey League’s Syracuse Junior Stars, and he was an All-State First Team selection in 2013 after averaging four points per game with Fayetteville-Manlius High School. Angello was a USHL Scholar Athlete for the 2013-14 season, and was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Science Honor Society.
