Biography

Hughes is one of only two three-year letter winners on the team and will be expected to step into a leadership role for the Big Red. She is one of the strongest athletes on the team, possesses strong back to the basket moves and has become a solid defender in the low post.

At Cornell
Hughes played in 25 games, making two starts during her junior season. She averaged nearly 10 minutes per game, scoring 1.6 points and grabbing 1.6 rebounds per contest. She scored a season-high six points vs. Ithaca and pulled down a season-high five rebounds vs. Lafayette, Ithaca and NJIT. Hughes saw action in 23 games during her sophomore season, getting seven starts. She posted her first career double-double as the Big Red defeated Niagara in the St. Bona Shootout, scoring a career-high 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. She later matched her 12-point performance on the strength of a 4-of-6 night from the floor at Yale on Feb. 24. As a freshman, Hughes saw action in all 27 games, averaging nearly 19 minutes per contest to go along with 2.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. She also finished the season ranked second on the team with 12 blocks. Hughes had the most complete game of her young career against Columbia on Jan. 8. During that contest she set career-highs in points (11), assists (3), blocks (4), field goals (3), free throws (5) and minutes played (34).

At St. Anne’s-Belfield
Hughes enjoyed a strong, yet shortened, senior year under Coach Phillip Stinnie at St. Anne’s-Belfield after suffering an injury in the previous summer during AAU play. She led her team to an undefeated record in league play in 2003 en route to the state title and earned all-state and all-district honors. A 2003 special mention selection by VirginiaPreps.com, Hughes was an All-Central Virginia selection as a junior after leading the region in rebounding that season. Hughes was also a letter winner in volleyball, track and cross country.

Personal
Megan Ross Hughes is the daughter of Joseph and Francine Hughes and is enrolled in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. She has two younger brothers, Jonathan and Christian.
